Value 77RSC 458

Hi folks! A friend picked up 77RSC chambered in 458 win mag. SN places it in 1975. Appears to have a Circassian walnut stock. He would like to know approximate value. He says 98% condition. I told him I know a bunch of knowledgeable people that might help.

Dave, I'm sure you have looked at completed auctions on GB for the answer. I don't see them selling for $9-something. I personally have owned two or three so don't need another. I babied one around through rain and all near St. Joe and never got a shot. I heard of a guy who shot an elk in the front shoulder with one and knocked the animal right off its feet and broke its neck. BTW the "C" stands for circassian wood. To answer your question - I'd say $650 - $750 would be a good range, used, pre- warning and without the original box and all. Not much use for one in the states.

Thanks, Randy! I will let him know. He thought since it had Circassian Walnut that it would be a premium. I already told him about what you said regarding not having much use here.....

Dave, there was one in a local shop near here. Nice condition, and as I recall it was with a Ruger No. 1 that had been rechambered to .458 Lott (with an ugly muzzle brake on it), and an M77 Express Magnum in .375 H&H. Story from the shop owner was they went to Africa and the owner wasn't planning another trip so was selling the rifles. I bought the M77 Express. The M77 in .458 was priced at $600 as I recall - I don't know if it was the "circassian" version. It was there for a long time, and not certain if it sold, or what it sold for. Lots of lookers at the big boomers but no takers that I could see.

I found and purchased a used like new Ruger 77R in .458 Win. Came with 13 live rounds in the 20 round box of Winchester Mag ammo with 500 grain steal jacket solids. Boy do they penetrate a tree, and I'm not sure exactly where they wound up...."FORE"~!!
I did not know the 458 Win Mag came in a 'standard' walnut stock in the Ruger 77 and mine was the first I knew of. I've actually seen several in Circassian wood and a friend has a new unfired in his safe. I shot a couple of does with mine.
Sold it as I felt I was experiencing what Dolly Parton must experience on a daily basis, only mine on ONE shoulder....the sling holding 10 pounds of rifle and scope [Weaver K2.5].
Fun gun!...but heavy!...then again I would not want it lighter for full house loads!

Just over a year ago I sold mine for 925. It was in like new in box condition. If I had the box and was not an honest guy I could of passed it off as nib. Was circassian but very plain. Took me awhile to sell it at that price. Actually sold it for more to a forum member. But it turned out to be the only time I got screwed over on this forum. After a couple months of excuses I gave up any hope he was actually going to send payment. I think the biggest issue with selling these is little collector interest and the 458 lott has killed nearly all interest in the 458 winchester for those looking for a big bore they are actually going to use.
