Any one want to ride the Valravn? new roller coaster in Sandusky? You only hit 75 mph I'm scared just looking at the pics

I made a decision about 55 years ago to NEVER get on a roller coaster. I'm 65 and thus far I have followed my own best advice!

I rode "The Voyage" at Holiday World about 11-12 years ago while in my mid-30's. My insides felt like a blender had been running in them for several hours afterward. Never again!! I guess I am getting old... and wiser. :wink:

The wife and I honeymooned at Cedar Point.
Generally I don't mind the trip unless its on one of those that is continually throwing you around in the car. Getting off and feeling like I was just in a kickboxing match for the next two days just ain't my idea of a fun time. Its usually the older coasters that have that issue......the newer ones have much better seats and straps. 8)

I always try to get in the front seat of the coaster car just in case something like the picture occurs. The newer steel coasters tend to ride more smoothly. The Texas Giant is a big old woodie that really jolts riders. I don't think much of the looping coasters, it's just a kind of non-event compared to a big steep drop. Rolls are always a bit rough because of the sudden onset and rapid roll rate. I prefer doing snap rolls in an airplane to that. I do miss doing a bit of aerobatic. Airplanes are a lot more fun than roller coasters.

My grand son worked on the coaster at Six Flags in Largo MD and told me that if you REALLY want the 'rush' on a coaster to sit in the last seat. He explained it as when you go over the first drop and you are in the front seat you are just starting to accelerate when you see the drop but by the time the last seats clear the top you are MOVING.

I guess I'm a bit of an oddball. As an old Huey crewchief/doorgunner,,having flown at tree top level,, doing all kinds of maneuvers, a roller coaster is boring to me. After I got out of the Army, I went to Carowinds & Six Flags over Ga. Both times,,, the coasters were boring,,, and due to the jerky, bumpy ride, felt more dangerous than flying. So, I just stopped riding them.
And as a fixed wing pilot,,, I had more fun at the controls of an airplane than ever in a coaster. So I leave the long lines, the heat of summer, the overpriced amusement parks etc to others that do enjoy them. So the next time you decide to ride a coaster, think of me,,, and be glad I'm not another guy or family ahead of you in line & allowing you to enjoy it a wee bit sooner!
But for the folks who do enjoy them,, by all means,,, go & have fun! It's just not for me.

I'd love to take a ride on Valravn. Looks a lot like the Mamba at Worlds of Fun in KC; it and the sadly gone Orient Express were a huge amount of fun. (The Orient Express was taken down a few years ago to make room for the Patriot roller coaster, in which the passenger seats are suspended from an overhead track, with the riders' legs hanging in space. It's also a hoot.)
The old-style wooden roller coasters, on the other hand . . . not a fan. The last coaster I rode - also at Worlds of Fun - was the old-style "Timber Wolf" and it beat the hell out of me. Very rough ride: Heimliched on the restraint bar on the drops and then my head smacking back into the headrest as the coaster started up the other side, being shaken from side to side like a rabbit in the jaws of a pit bull the whole time.
Huuuuurrrrrrk, smack, shakeshakeshake. Huuuuurrrrrrk, smack, shakeshakeshake. For five of the longest minutes of my life.
I've never before lost my cookies riding a roller coaster. I did immediately after disembarking from the Timber Wolf. WoF has several people ambulance-trip injured on that ride every year, and it's no wonder. :lol:

1968 I rode the then-highest/fastest/whateverist wood frame coaster ride out over the water line in LA somewhere.
Discovered the visual field was terrifying; when I closed my eyes the ride was !fun!
Repeated the ride a second time to try my theory. Yes, it was true. I ~could~ ride with eyes closed & enjoy the trip.
That's the last such ride I took; the mere visual graphic of those wrapping around the high end of a sky scraper, or the blasto-matic accelerator/swing upside down/etc leaves me on the ground virtually doing what the photo above shows.

I ALWAYS loved the Old CYCLONE RACER at the NUPIKE in Long Beach, Ca. A GREAT old wooden roller coaster.

Reminds me of watching my kids at the carnivals and theme parks. We have been to many through the years of their childhood. It is a joy watching your kids enjoy their rides with smiles and giggles right up to the magical point where you see a sudden change in facial expression. High heat + high humidity + too much carnival food + motion = Seafood surprise and technicolor yawns. It is amazing to see how far puke can go when your kid is spinning in a giant circle 25 feet off the ground. Can you say "centrifugal force" boys and girls?
I couldn't decide whether to run up and comfort my kid or slink back into the crowd for a bit.
Any way thanks for the memories, I laughed until tears came.
