UPS Recent Slow Service...

Usually I am pleased with the timeliness of delivery times with the major carriers. Don't know what's holding them up now. I've got a gun to ship, and was out of tape. Ordered a case of packaging tape from U-Line, (Seattle), and after a week I've yet to see it.

Then out of the clear blue, my Wife says she's still waiting for a UPS package from Memphis since the 11th. Tracking says it's been in numerous places since the 11th, then stagnated 3-days at the UPS hub 12-miles from here, and now will be transferred to USPS.

Memphis, Spokane Wa, Hermiston Or, Portland, Tualatin Or, then to USPS which will take it back to Portland for delivery to Oregon City.. Must be a new shortcut.

If these were shipped with UPS "Mail Innovations," the only amazing innovation will be how much extra time the package takes to transfer from UPS to USPS. It's a great way to add several days to your delivery while two logistic systems figure out how to deliver a single package!

Seriously though, I've had nothing but problems with UPS. They left a package that was marked as adult signature only on my porch, they were indignant when I told them it had been stolen. Lately, they've "innovated" a way to drop off packages at a convenience store in the 'hood so I have to go into a business I would not usually patronize days after the delivery is attempted to pick up my package. When possible, I use FedEx.

Wayno, I won't use UPS unless it is absoluty nesessary. Took a month or so to get them to pay for a bass guitar (a Fender Custom Shop no less!) they ruined. :mrgreen:

It sounds like "productivity improvements" have hit UPS with a vengeance. I have noticed a downward spiral in general America though. My VA meds go to Orlando, then back to St Pete; and that is the way it is, I looked it up on the tracking site.

I live 10 miles from the VA Med Center, and the package travels about 100-200+ miles getting to my house. I can't wait for some prick to steal a package from my front door, that would be the cherry on the ice cream.

Usually, when I buy something mail order, I have no say in how it's shipped to me.

And when I'm shipping a gun, USPS is my choice, only because they are two-hours-roundtrip closer to me than UPS or FedEx. But USPS is not great either. I'm finding the USPS employees must attend a gun-hating class before they can work at the counter. I am truly short on options.

This has been my experience too. The last packages UPS delivered to me looked like they were dragged behind the truck, all the way here. USPS has been pretty good, but only if it starts out being delivered by them. I've noticed some places I have dealt with didn't offer FedEx as a shipping option. If UPS or USPS are the only choices, I go with USPS.

I must be getting old. I remember the early days of UPS and people where praising them as the best around. I don't do a lot of shipping. It's a rare event a package comes in or out but thanks for the warning. I'll use anyone else now.

I have used both and the only problem I have ever had was with Fed-Ex. They insisted that they had attempted delivery when I was sitting looking out the door of my office when they said the door was locked when they stopped by. Pure horse hockey. Took three days to finally get my delivery.

Dont forget UPS and USPS have to abide by certain rules not written by the company if ya know what I mean.
And if they still have packages on the truck at the end of the shift they go back to the shop and go out again the next day. Business addresses get priority.

Fox Mike: I've had FedEx do the very same thing. I was home, with my wife and a friend of hers. They didn't deliver the box and said nobody was home. I literally watched the truck drive away. That was 3 years ago and it's been difficult with Fed Ex ever since. UPS is not much better really. They seem more common for regular home deliveries. We use Amazon so we get a lot of packages.

BUT, I just mailed a handgun UPS, they were very gun friendly people at the counter. In fact it was a very positive experience. They even gave me tape to use.

FedEx home delivery really isnt FedEx. They are independent contractors. And they are really bad about just dropping a package on the porch and fleeing.

Wow :shock: I must be doing something right, my FedEx Ground and Express guys are great as is my UPS guy. USPS is not a problem, where I live we don't get door to door mail delivery so I have to go to the PO everyday to get my mail or to ship something. However, 2 of the 3 people that work at my PO are customers of mine and I've known them for almost 20 years. The third just started there last year but handles all my gun shipments no problem.

In all that time, I have only had 1 gun go missing and that was an incoming gun via UPS and they caught the thief (a holiday worker-he was just stealing packages of the size that would be holding small electronics, phones, etc. so he wasn't "out" to steal a gun, but he did and he is now paying the piper) but never recovered my customers gun (a collectible CZ-75 variant).

10 days ago I shipped a Kimber pistol from Little Rock,Ar. To Kimber CS in Yonkers, NY. I used UPS 2 day air. From the time I dropped it off to when a Kimber employee signed for it only took 44'hrs.

I get a lot of stuff from Amazon and they use(d?) UPS heavily.
Until last October.

Since then, I've had UPS deliver . . . . . one . . . . . package. Everything
else has been USPS with a few FedEx mixed in.

UPS had better get their collective act back in gear.

They are too expensive compared to USPS, and the US Mail is quicker. I have a very good P.O. in a small town. I've only had one problem, years ago. when they broke the stock on a M77RS 270 Flat Bolt! :mrgreen:

Weather related they say of recent delays, particularly in the greater Portland area. There was a piece on the local news tonight regarding this issue.

Last night my package from Auburn arrived. 7-days for a 3-hour drive.

And my wifes package from Memphis arrived tonight. 14-days for a 5-hour flight.

My wife has been waiting for a package since mid December from New Hampshire. Tracking shows it went to Warrendale (just north of Pittsburgh) to Mass., back to Warrendale, and at the last scan was in New Jersey where they've lost track of it since Jan. 8th.

I had one similar to that about a year ago, only mine started in CA and
ended up going all over the East coast. After about five days of insanity,
I cancelled the order. It arrived the next day. :shock:

YMMV, but that's what worked for me. :wink:

I don't know what has happened to UPS I get at times three orders a week Some times from sellers I have used in the past. these orders usually came in 2-3 days now it is 4-5 days or longer. It seems when UPS turned the final delivery over to the USPS things went to the dogs.

And USPS ain't much better this week.

Mailed a shotgun on the 24th headed for Ohio. Checked the tracking today, and on the 26th it was in Federal Way Washington, 2 hours North of here. And then on to Ohio...I hope.

I guess with the service of all the carriers declining, nobody has to try very hard to compete.

I've got a shotgun stock on it's way. (UPS. No other option offered) It's supposed to be here Monday. That's day 8 (business days), of an order that was said to be delivered in 3-5 business days.

As an aside: The roof of the FedEx terminal here was starting to collapse, under the weight of the recent snows. No one was allowed in for almost a week. That probably put a kink in their deliveries.

USPS and FedEx Ground keep all their packages moving from region to region without holding any to make sure you don't get a package shipped 5 to 7 day speed in 3 days. I get FedEx Economy stuff from just about anywhere east of the Mississippi in two or three days.
UPS holds packages which would be delivered faster than the speed promised at the hub nearest the local UPS depot. So, when a package from your vendor that was shipped economy arrives at the hub 20 miles from your house in two days, UPS leaves it sit there until the 5th business day to transfer it to the local depot, or USPS for final delivery. I really get upset when something hits the hub in two days and it's a Wednesday, meaning I won't see it on my porch until next Tuesday. UPS does not count Saturday and Sunday as business days. Overnight service is different.

UPS dropped off my shotgun stock this morning, in excellent condition. Much joy! A few days more than they said, but I guess that's what to expect now days.
