I own a marine repair business and have several customer boats in for repair. This morning I heard a loud noise coming from the back of a customers boat. When I went over to investigate I found 3 dead kittens. It seems that momma cat put her kittens in the boat for safety. Along came a male that killed all three kittens. I chased the male off but all three kittens had broken necks. I removed them but the rest of the day the female came back to the boat looking for the kittens. Tomorrow the male cat meets its maker.

While I deal with nature & it's beauty & horrors daily, I hope you can nail this tomcat.

I have domesticated many a stray, "feral" cat in my day. Currently, I own 5 cats. Four of which were found on my property. Some of the most loving & happy pets you'd ask for. As I type this, "Ruger" is rolling around on the desk, pushing stuff around. She was named "Ruger" because she was found, as a kitten, on the first day, of the first "East Coast Ruger Forum Gathering!" At 13-14 lbs, she's a handfull now!

Living "on the outskirts".... "Cat Rape" is VERY common.

7 years ago in Tolar, one of the state's largest rabies epidemics, was perpetuated by none other than stray cats. The local animal control was so overwhelmed, they were 3 weeks out on responding to calls.

We called in on a problem. By the time the young gent and his Sup. showed: "we're here to take care of your cat problem." Dad answered the door, sorry, but we had to handle it already...

"Thank you sir" With a tip of his hat and they were on their way...

population EXPLOSION and hyper-expansion was a problem created by everybody from surrounding towns "dumping unwanted pets in our small out of the way town.

We resolved the issue as quickly as possible after realizing it was as serious as it was.

People in Tulsa metro used to dump cats and dogs on our oil lease acreage west of Tulsa. We vaporized every feral cat we saw with either a .243 Ruger #1 or a Mauser in 22-250. They will kill a whole covey of quail or lesser prairie chickens and not even eat them.
My wife and daughters had cats, they knew instinctive that I was the grim reaper

Now this will make cat lovers mad, and before you say I am so horrible, yep I probably am, I actually have liked a few cats in my life, good friendly critters, but note I said "a few"

Well then I guess that makes me one evil guy cause I've shot probably a cat a year since we moved here .All of them were ferral and would raid my trash can and make a mess but more than that ,being ferral and my having dogs on more than one occasion, dogs being dogs chase cats.My worry is rabies and even though my dogs shots are up to date, a ferral cat can put a hurting a dog
and I don't care to pay unnecessary vet bills.
.22 rounds are a lot cheaper too .
And BTW just to keep the haters off me I've shot a few ferral dogs too .
We done have dog wardens here and the D.G.I.F. only deals with wild animals so it's really up to the folks here to handle these problems.
A pack of ferral dogs are dangerous it kids, pets and even adults so when one shows up ( you can tell the difference between a lost/ abandoned dog and a ferral dog) its by by dog period.

The question was asked why not let nature take its course. Well today you can just call me nature. I am going to be part of that course. It just plays on me hard that the three kittens didn't have but a couple of days of life while old "Tom" is still out doing his thing.

R.T ,
Kill that ferral tom as I said rabies is a real concern with them, just one bite or scratch from him and you get to enjoy a series if rabies shots.

If we were talking about true nature... in the wild, I would agree... but I don't see a boat repair place and the back of a boston whaler or such as natural place for wild cats or other wild animals to live. I love cats almost as much as I love dogs, but there is a point.

When I read this last night, I knew it would generate a lot of comments on both sides of the issue.
First, it's no secret that I love my cats.
But, I also know that true feral cats AND dogs can be a problem. A feral is wild, not domesticated. And in general, wild animals only kill for food. Yes, at times, I've personally seen coyotes kill sheep in larger numbers than what they would eat, as they were teaching their pups to hunt. And when on a "killing frenzy" they do kill more than they will eat at that time. But a yote will return to feed off carcasses.
Domestic cats will kill an animal and bring it to it's alpha person, as an offering. Ferals will kill & eat.
Packs of feral dogs will kill & eat part & leave. Locally we recently had 2 dogs kill a pair of donkeys. Nothing was eaten, and the dogs in question, were supposedly domestic.

Did anybody else see the story last week where a female veterinarian got her "first bow kill" on a cat. She arrowed a cat & posted pics on the web. She got fired, and it's also possible the cat belonged to a lady. I never heard proof in any follow-up on the story.

Cats do roam a bit. Even granny's favorite puddy-tat. Sometimes the family pet escapes and gets a bit lost.

Yes, tomcats will kill young kittens if he can. Similar things happen to wild animals. That tends to put that tom in the feral category to me.

My points are this to those who choose to kill any wandering cat they see.
Are you SURE it's feral or just a wandering family pet?
How would you feel if somebody shot your cat OR dog calling it a feral?
How would you react if the cat OR dog belonged to your grandmother or your daughter?
Do you automatically shoot every roaming dog you see using the same prejudice you have towards cats?

Ferals can be bad in both types of animals. But I feel that just like guns, cats have been given a very bad rap by mis-information. Kinda like guns. Too many times, people get their education from somebody they feel they can respect & think whet they learn is true. "Guns are bad. Guns cause innocent kids to die etc ad nausem."
For many years, I've heard stories about how feral cats wipe out quail or other birds.
Then I hear stories, (although they never get the press like the bird stories,) about folks who keep "barn cats" or others around their place as a way of controlling rats & such.
First, the number one reason there is a decline in quail & all is the loss of habitat. Science has proven that.
Next, from my own personal studies, I do not feel a stray cat is automatically to blame for all the ills in the world. I happen to have 2 strays that visit my home, my property, and as far as I can find, do not belong to anybody. I see them on my cameras all the time. I occasionally see them around. Yet, I also see plenty of birds, squirrels, rabbits, doves, woodcock, & even "gasp" quail.

Yet, at times, I've seen a cats AND dogs that were obviously not in good health, and chose to put them down.

I love all animals, yet I do not have a "kill 'em all" attitude when I see a new, strange, or POSSIBLE feral cat or dog on my place. But if I see actions by any such as killing kittens, or unhealthy looks, such as mange or badly unkempt fur, or a dog that acts aggressive, it'll get shot quickly.

I still vote to kill the tomcat as he's likely feral.

After all, it reduced the number of feral cats, which is your objective in shooting him.

Yeah, and it he kills him, that is at least, one more dead feral cat...falls right in line with his plan.

I say, kill him...I have seen feral cats reek havoc with domestic cats.

Any time that I am predator hunting and a cat responds to my calls...he goes down. I guess I am working against nature...oh, well.

The issue I have with your points is this. Dogs must have a license cats don't.

Cat owners often have indoor/outdoor cats. These same unlicensed indoor outdoor cats hunt my bird feeder, as well as the woods across the street. I see them dragging a carcass home, or elsewhere.

If they are so precious take care of them.

License them and apply the same laws that apply to dogs. Then it is known what is wild, feral, or let loose by an irresponsible owner and what is someone's pet.

Oh and these same cats really like my strawberry patch and wife's flower gardens better than their litter box. The garden hose doesn't keep them out and I really think a long stay in a Havahart will only PO the neighbor and not really help.

So do I give in to SSS or continually deal with someone else's cat? (rhetorical)

Titan's point about is valid. The tom is wild the kittens are too. Our "ain't that cute" mentality is in play here and I see that. That said if the kittens were known about (it doesn't sound like they were) get them to a shelter, because once the kittens grow up they will just become more wild/feral cats reproducing more, and I'd still deal with tom either way.

Saw a bumper sticker: "I like cats, they taste like chicken".

I asked an Asian lady one time if that was true. She became very offended and replied, "That not true! They taste like turkey!"

Dan, not all states require a license for dogs. But many states do require rabies shots for both.

Indoor/outdoor cats, there are dogs that people do the same thing with. Many dogs kill livestock & other pets. Plus, they also bite people.

I FULLY agree, if they are precious, take care of them. I PREACH it a lot in my job to get people who own cats to make them indoor only cats all the time.

Again, not all dogs in all states are required to be licensed. But I agree, equal laws for both.

Gardens, flower beds etc are attacked by more than just cats. Rabbits, groundhogs etc all can be issues. Plus, dogs can & will dig holes in such places too. Instead of a waterhose, or such, try a light electric fence to keep ALL unwanted animals out.

The SSS rule. Do you apply that equally to dogs that trespass?

Kittens, can be caught & tamed, OR if treated badly will become wild. All but one of my cats were "wild" when found, yet all they wanted was affection & food. (One was born in Miss Penny's lap, AFTER her stray mother was rescued by us. She came in the house on day one, already pregnant, and never went back outside.)

I have never understood the hatred people seem to have towards cats, and profess love & compassion for other animals, especially dogs. My BIL is a prime example. He hates cats, with a passion, yet proclaims he is a Christian. He goes to church, sings in the choir, devotes a lot to the church etc. Yet, when we try & tell him that a cat is also one of God's creation, he denies it.

I can & will say that not all cats are good, but neither are dogs. I CAN say we don't get news stories about cats attacking kids & causing serious medical injuries or death like we do about dogs.
I do know that the local Sheriff Dept animal control can deem a dog "dangerous" and have it put down. They do not do that with cats. They can confiscate a dog, for public safety but don't worry about a cat. Unless it's a potential rabies issue.

I deal with animals DAILY, it's my job. I'm state certified in Animal Damage Control. When it comes to cats & dogs, the local LEO A/C unit handles most calls. But, I do get calls about problem dogs that the County has failed to control. Never had a problem cat call, but I have had to do a few rescues.

The Tom killed the kittens because they were not his. This is common.
I also have several cats. I have sent boss toms to the great beyond for gutting my fixed toms and for trying to rape yet to be fixed females. Always one boss tom that tears the crap out of non rivals for no reason and breeds young females. Ever watch a cat mate? The female has to be whipped into submission. Sorry, cats taste like rabbit, that I am sure of.

TitanX, an allergy to them is a VERY valid reason to not own any nor be around them.

As for behavior issues, both dogs & cats can have annoying habits. Dogs can bark non-stop, jump up on people, bite people, (my worker got bit & I got nipped just 2 weeks ago by a poodle cross WITH the owner standing there & assuring us all 3 were friendly.)
Again, you can train dogs AND cats to where their "bad" habits go away. I use a water squirt bottle to train my cats.

And yes, as we've alluded to, stray tomcats can & will kill other cats. They want to be the alpha cat in the area. That is their "reason" and it's a natural law set forth by Mother Nature. But the same thing happens in many species as well.

All animals need control in populated areas. Humans have interrupted many naturally balanced wild areas for centuries.
I will help control problem animals, including feral cats when the NEED arises. But to kill ANY animal for the sake of killing or for unjustified hatred is wrong. Be it cat, dog, monkey, snake, skunk, coon, etc.

Contender, like you I am an animal person. That includes doing something very distasteful to me, but needs to be done. I will not idly watch a road maimed animal suffer. I will always stop to move turtles out of the road. Want to really get me mad, swerve to hit an old large turtle crossing the road.

I'm not a big fan of cats but I don't hate them. Kittens are cool........but they grow up to be cats.

I'm not worried about animals getting into our yard and gardens. I'm tired of the neighbors cats using our yard as their bathroom.
The only other animals I have an issue with (besides ANY causing damage) are raccoons for the same reason as the neighbors cats.

Yes I apply SSS equally if deserved, but they REALLY need to be an issue for that. Live traps and a ten mile cruise work fine for wild animals even if the DNR opposes it.

volshooter is right, most cats from house cats to lions and tigers will kill kittens that aren't related to them to free a female to be impregnated again with their own DNA. It keeps rivals from reproducing.

I've never had a stray dog sneak into my garage and get unknowingly closed in, and then urinate in multiple places before he was discovered and released. It took months to get rid of that odor. If you have not had the forced experience of eau de Tom Cat, you've not had the full life experience.

It did not take months however to insure that the cat in question would never do that to me again. I borrowed a live trap, and caught the SOB the first night. He was released in a remote area far, far away, from civilization, and has not reappeared here. I suspect and hope that the coyotes got him, because after all, no one is totally useless, they can always serve as protein.

I have no love for cats. They are untrainable, manipulative and unsanitary, as they like to walk onto food prep and sleeping areas, and P@#$ in garages.

VERMIN!

I saw that addressed on a science program about lions in Africa. An adult male will come into an area and kill off the cubs sired by other males.
