It's the highlight of my year. 4 of us that went to high school together try to get together every year for 10 days of nothingness. We used to camp past Creede but for the last few years we have moved to the Sargents area. A little fishing, a little glassing for game, and a lot of clamoring around the mountains like we were still young. Two of us are still living in Kentucky, one is in Ft. Worth, Tx and one is a C/S Colorado resident who will have deer/cow elk tags. In two more months we will make the 1200 mile/20-hour trip there, leaving Thursday night after work for a stop-for-fuel-and-food-only trip; arriving Friday afternoon and leaving the following weekend for another full-day-long drive home. Yep, I'm pushing 55 and I still act like a kid come September. And my wife fully supports us getting together while we still can. Me and her go to Colorado whenever we can. We used to do it every year, but now it's more like every 2, sometimes 3 years.

I'm just west of Sargents, in Gunnison. No more traipsing around for me, due to bad knees. If you plan on coming to Gunny, give me a shout!

When we hunted Creede, I would go through Gunnison on my way home. I always had to stop at that outdoors store with the hundreds of deer and elk racks and all those authentic old rifles, shotguns and revolvers. I cant recall the name offhand, but it is right there on 50 downtown Gunnison.

Is THAT where the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is located?
I remember playing a composition in High School band by that named; Loved it, it was one of my favorite pieces for French Horn.

I'm not sure; maybe one of the residents can say. BUt I think that is the National Park's name in Gunnison. I do know that on our way, between Montrose and Gunnison IIRC, is a sign designating Dark Canyon (which I remember because of Louis Lamour's book).

Black Canyon is the Montrose end. The canyon starts at the dam, and goes to Montrose. Traders Rendezvous is still the store with all the antlers, and stuffed critters inside. BTW, we have a pretty fair BBQ joint now= 5Bs, on the south side of the highway, bout 2 blocks before the first light. For all you "Duke" fans, the area around Montrose is where the meadow fight scenes from True Grit were filmed. Gonna have to look for the Dark Canyon sign. Been reading LL for almost 50 years!

Unit 681? I have the topo map for it, I will be hunting south of there in unit 68, my tag for early gun bull is good in both 68/681

551
Good luck
Best part of me getting the bull tag for 68 is that I can bowhunt OTC either sex tag Aug 28-Sept 25 and utilize that time in the woods scouting for big bulls for my gun tag Oct 15th

Kentuck - that is absolutely Great. I don't know ya - but I enjoy real enthusiasm. Don't waste a moment to make a Grand memory.

'Enjoy',
Jerry

Gunnison - Nice area. I hunted with my best friend and hunting companion of nearly 60 years on the Uncompahgre Plateau (ssseveral years back). You take care and enjoy.
