A few days ago, Grouch Attack saw a hen turkey in the driveway picking up some spilled seed beans. This evening I was working at my desk when I heard a strange sound and went to check it out. The hen was so close to the deck that I could only get a pic of her head and 1/2 the neck. A few minutes later, I was pacing around while explaining something to one of my employees over the phone and there was Mrs Turkey within 30' of the front door just strolling around the yard.
I'd bet she has a nest in the hay field just beyond the yard fence.

She's a pretty little thing. I talk to her every day as I either am walking by, or driving by, and she now stays on her nest. Reckon she finally got used to me. Sprayed the field yesterday, getting ready to plant 11,000 acres of beans. I showed the spray coupe driver where she was and told him to raise the boom and not spray close to her nest.

Son also has a turkey nesting at the edge of his yard. Even with dogs and cats running around, there must be a sense of safety compared to some random spot out in the hayfield.
Son thinks it may be that the dogs keep the next predators away.

Looked out back at the pond this morning and instead of the Blue Heron stealing my fish there is a hen Turkey wading in there. This is the second year now we have had a hen wading in the pond. We see this one almost daily.

Wading turkeys?? I don't doubt that at all.
Turkeys will eat almost anything they can swallow whole.

With all the dead Ash trees falling n my place & me not keeping up with the clearing, the trails in my woods are grown up & the Turkeys don't find my place like they once did.
But this used to be a common sight here.

A friend used to have a small irrigation pond that the herons liked to get into.

I only get the occasional turkey passing thru the actual yard . But about 1/2 mi by birds flight , or 3/4 mi by road , regularly see a flock .

Thinking about it , see Bald Eagle flying over about as often as turkey .

They'll disappear once turkey season opens. Just like the deer.

But not vice versa , turkies will boldly strut back and forth in front of you during deer season.
