I haven't seen True Grit for many years and it was on the movie channel last night. I caught it from the beginning and was enjoying it.
All was good and Rooster was putting the reins in his mouth getting ready for the the climactic shoot out and the picture went out. :cry: It came back on when Rooster was pinned under his horse and couldn't reach his gun and was about to be shot and just about when Glenn Campbell fired his Sharps at Robert Duvall it went out again. :x This continued on and off until the girl was pulled from the snake pit. What happened to Glen Campbell's character? I assume shot, but he hung on long enough to save Mattie and Rooster. :?:
 
Was the particular channel you were watching trying to edit the "violence" out of the movie? Seems really strange. Sort of a cheapie version of Steven Spielberg editing "E.T." in the 25th anniversary edition to change the handguns in the hands of the Federal agents into hand-held radios (this is not a joke; if you watch this latest version of E.T. you will not see any firearms displayed, only radios).
 
I wouldn't want to spoil the ending, or any other part ! Considering what gets shown on TV in the way of violence and skin, really doubt True Grit was edited for violence or firearms. I was all set to NOT like the new version of True Grit on general priciples, but gotta admit I enjoyed it too.

I too thought that way until I found out that the second movie actually followed the book much closer then the John Wayne version. I figured I'd give it a look. I liked both versions.
 
No editing involved. The picture went out because of a poor signal. The weather was very cloudy with storms forecasted even though we didn't have any. I assume probably a thunder storm between me and the station out of D.C. Usually can get the station with no problems. The picture was perfect until the reins in the mouth charge. :(
 
Sorry for your loss.....

I was going to try and explain what happened to the Campbell Character but not sure with my froggy memory... I do know that when he was finally dead Rooster make the comment that the Ranger had saved his life twice the 2nd time after he was dead... or such.

I was looking for what specifically happened to him and how he made it back to help.
I'm not going to loose any sleep over it, just wondering. The station is showing John Wayne movies all week. Sands of Iwo Jima, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist, In Harm's Way, etc. this is the first one I sat down to watch.
 
After Glenn shots Pepper, on his way back to Mattie, Chaney smashes him in the head with a rock resulting in the wound that he succumbs to.
 
Turtleman and Neal watch the 1969 John Wayne film: True Grit. Find out what they think of the Duke and this classic western.

Great stuff coach!! All you mentioned are classics. I particularly love In Harm's Way.
 
I didn't see True Grit. But Rio Bravo was on last night. Walter Brennan plays a character named "Stumpy" in this movie. I always get a kick out of him.
 
Jimbo, thanks, am also a Turtlman fan ! Thats some funny...oh yeah, shouldn't say that here.
 
I see the 2 True Grit versions as two parts of the same story. Wayne's version was more from Rooster Cogburn's point of view, and the Coen Brother's version was more from Matty Ross's viewpoint. I have them both on CD and tend to sit through both of them more often than not. I enjoy them both.

As for The Shootist, I saw that one on the big screen. I knew as they showed snips from his earlier movies that The Shootist was his last movie. His good bye, it's been fun, but I'm done now, movie. I think his character JB Books died the way Wayne would have preferred to. Not writhing in pain from cancer.

The Cowboys was the worst western movie Wayne ever appeared in. The plot stunk, and his character was a disposable one right from the start. Any new actor could have played it. They should have simply cast someone else for the role. The emphasis was on the child cowboys anyway.

I have The Shootist and The Cowboys on CD as part of my JW collection. But I can't watch them. Each for different reasons.
