I am having a hard time breaking down a ruger standard .22. Its not a Mark I. I have the manual, original box and papers. I can open the hinge pin on the back strap and can remove slide. I thought the barrel should free from the the grip I can not seem to free the barrel. Because of not being able to free the barrel, it will not go back together with the slide working . any advice or can someone tell me what i am doing wrong

A small block of wood, a towel, and a dead blow hammer works best in my experience. Use the plastic face on the dead blow. Lube the lug well, as you will have to do the same to put it back together. This is the first dozen or so times you disassemble in my experience.

Many folks never take them apart. Some here have shot THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of rounds without a disassembly. Thorough cleaning from time to time ~ yes ~ but taking it apart.......not so much.

There's also some YouTube videos covering this.

Yes,, the reciever to frame fit can be tight at times. As mentioned,, a sharp blow to the back of the reciever with a proper plastic dead blow,, or something similar will remove the two halves. To re-assemble,, place the barrel on an old piece of carpet & tap the back of the frame.
Now,, to get it back together,, remember the hammer strut must be in the proper place,, as does the hammer. Read the manuel,, or check out the videos mentioned above.

thanks to all who have responded. the gun is clean and i would avoid taking off the barrel if I could get the slide to work correctly when all is locked in. I can not get that back working correctly. I am going to get the dead blow hammer and a good block of wood. thanks again.

I gave up on the hammers & mallets years ago and just use a piece of carpet remnant on the work bench and give the receiver a good rap ,on or off on this "pad" and it works EVERY time for us, plus NO damage to any of the parts if you "miss" with the hammer...( see that all too often.....)

I think there are two separate issues here. Removing the barrel (i.e. - receiver) from the frame may or may not have anything to do with the slide (i.e. - bolt assembly) from working.

If you mean by "slide not working" because the slide (bolt assembly) will not retract more than 1/2" after installing the hinge pin (i.e. - mainspring housing/latch assembly), that usually means the hammer strut has not seated into the dimple on top of the hinge pin (mainspring housing/latch assembly) when the hinge pin (mainspring housing/latch assembly) has been swung back into the frame handle at final assembly.

Nonetheless, the barrel (receiver) to frame fit is typically very tight, and requires more than just hand pressure to separate the two.
