tree camera/illegal dumping

I live in the country and people frequently come out there or I live and dump all kinds of things from deer guts animals toilet and other kinds of trash on my road frontage there are woods on either side of the road my dogs go rolling it eat it it smells horrible it looks horrible and I'm tired of it. I'd like to set up a camera or two that does video and or take pictures and catch these people in the act and id them and their vehicles but without them knowing (until the sheriff or wildlife and fisheries knock on your door of course). Does anybody have any suggestions?
 
Lot's of game cameras will capture video and stills and can be easily programmed for 24 hrs, or only night, etc. I bought a WGI camera at Walmart a couple months ago for $65 that would fit your need I think. You'll also need to buy a large capacity SD card for video. Most will have a range of around 30-40 ft, and use infra-red flash at night. Some are camo, etc.

Whatever you buy, placement is important, not only to get a good image, but to hide it from observation. Somebody spots it and they'd likely steal it.
 
Use of cameras may or may not be legal evidence in court. YMMV depending on local laws.

Criminals have the right not to be filmed or photographed without there knowledge, in certain jurisdiction.

Call the cop shop and find out. ps
 
I've no personal experience with the cameras. Think your idea has merit. I would be careful to hide or camo them really well. Wife had a job for a while at a pharmacy where she helped with the film. When a cam is first set up you usually take a pic of yourself to be sure its working before ya walk off. She saw a pic of guy we know, that we'd heard had his cam stolen. Wife called sheriff and the guy we know. he guy that dropped off the film and was to pic up was a stranger...caught. If all are 'puterized digital thingies, well still hade or camo them really well. Also realize the folks caught may figure out who ID'ed them. Caution.
 
Yes, some type of game camera should work. If you have much frontage, you may want to put it where there is a turn-around, or similar place to pull over.

Yes, hide the camera well. I bet a fair amount wouldn't notice it anyway.
 
Install a couple outdoor pan and zoom capable cameras on your frontage that you can monitor live from your house. You have to admit that would be pretty nifty. You could have a joystick in one hand zooming in on the perpetrators while having the phone in the other relaying license plate information to law enforcement.

^^ Even if the pics can't be used to prosecute, they can be useful info for the police/sheriff to stake out the place and possibly catch somebody in the act.
 
I had the same problem. Took a sheet of plywood and a nail gun. Turned it over and covered with leaves. A bunch of Private Property, No Tresspass, Posted signs all around it. Even put one that they would have to drive over. A couple days later saw a wrecker and called the local pd. I think the few bucks they saved in dump fees kinda paled by comparison to 4 tires and wrecker fees. The cops also made them pick up the stuff they dumped. Word got out what an a-hole I was for doing it. No trouble since.
 
I thought about posting the nailed board idea too. I know some wouldn't like it, 'liability worries', but if bad enough I may resort to it.

I would 1st have plenty of signs up, then cover it with grass and leaves. Of course you would want to keep dogs, walkers, and others from stepping on it.
 
I know your situation isn't funny and people dumping on your property is a real pain, but I keep thinking of Alice's restaurant and Officer Obie's twenty seven 8x10 color glossies of the scene of the crime. Good luck finding a solution.

I can't say for Wisconsin but here in Indiana that would be considered 'setting a trap" and you could be charged with vandalism.
 
Security cameras are ubiquitous and there is no way a perp who is on your land and breaking a law can scream HIS rights are being violated. Unless of course you live in CA ...

As for having your camera stolen, put in a second one to cover it --- with a Claymore under it.

To be honest I think that any video is acceptable in court. You just can't record conversation without a warrant. If you are in public then you are fair game and per the OP his property is. If you look back I asked this same question about game cameras and the consensus was basically the same as this post.

Make sure you use a 16 gig. card because it will be set off several times a day. Mine are mounted on two trees on my property and I would challenge you to see them. My initial objective was to catch the kids smashing my mail box. It did catch them and I let them off, just kids being kids, they apologized and paid for a new mailbox and I felt better getting these criminals off of the road. :wink: . I wasn't out to criminalize kids, just quit beating up my mailbox. What was funny, the one kid who hit the box, said it hurt like hell. I have a diamond plate welded box on a steel post buried about 4' in the ground, doesn't give much. HaHa.

My Uncle years ago kept having gas stolen from his farm barrel. The kind up high on a stand. The padlock would be cut and gas missing. One time when it ran empty he put water in it. Called the sheriff a couple mornings later and told him there were a couple of vehicles stranded down the road just a little bit from him. Said they probably robbed his water barrel. Sheriff came out and impounded them. Cost the kids a food sized chunk of change to get their cars back and then they had to repair them. Not to mention the embarrassment of having to apologize to my Uncle!
 
The "area under video surveillance" and "no dumping" signs are a good idea.
Also, some tree cams use wifi, and send pics right to your 'puter, (although expensive) so even if someone found and stole them you would have video proof against them.

These animals are breaking the law and you are scared to record them in the act!? Do it and post it on you tube and everywhere else you can think of!
