How did it work for you this year? As per usual I didn't get started early and still have fruit on the vine. I gave up on my small garden and tried growing the same variety in some kind of fabric pots my wife found. Worked OK, next year going to a much larger container. Last year I harvested near 60 tomatoes from two plants. This year I have harvested around 30 (I don't count them, I guess) over the season so far. Not too bad for a first try at growing them in pots.

This was supposedly the hottest summer ever, so I am interested in how that may have affected your tomatoes?

We had lots of rain and hot weather this summer and my Tomatoes, Peppers and Broccoli were the only things in the garden that did well. Because of our short growing season I prune the suckers off the tomato plants, limit them to 5 sets of blossoms and then clip the tops so they stop getting bigger. I get about 30 tomatoes per plant. I still have a lot of ripe tomatoes on the plants.

This is what we got after going out of town for 4 days. So far we’ve canned 12 pints of crushed tomatoes, six quarts of tomato sauce, and eaten enough salsa and bruschetta to almost turn us off the stuff. This year I planted 3 Roma, 1 Early Girl, and 1 beefsteak variety whose name I can’t remember. The beefsteak gives tomatoes bigger than my fist.

That one tipped the scale at 1.6#.

I have too many wild creatures come to get them and not enough sunlight to keep them happy.

This is the first year in a long long time that I didn't plant anything. No tomatoes or peppers. Had a bumper crop of Polk though.

We do ok at best w tomatoes. Bit, We hav a neighbor who is the true tomato whisperer!! Absolutely amazing the quantity and quality of tomato’s she grows. Her fav variety is Celebrity. She has said she’s gonna take me under her wing next spring and teach me how to really grow maters. I could really use that lesson!!

We got a lot of parasites down here. Have tried the organic stuff it works so-so. Haven't planted them for a long time. I m not sure about where you live but the nematodes in the soil ( not orange and white little froglike creatures) are prevalent. From what I understand you either try to keep the plants healthy enough to out produce what they diminish or put 7 dust in the soil about a month before planting. I don't like 7 dust.

Only one year did I have a vegetable garden. And we had the best okra and tomatoes ever! Also made 39 pints of kosher fill pickle spears!

Put up 6 quarts of tomato juice and 14 pints of corn salsa. Also did 16 quarts of sweet lime pickles. Tomatoes this year were 4 Early Girl, 4 Big Boy, 4 Beefsteak, 4 German Johnson and 4 Supersweet 100 cherry tomatoes which we’ve had coming out our ears all summer. Still getting plenty for sandwiches and salads and probably will up till early December when the hard freeze night’s start. This is from a couple weeks ago

When we lived in Phoenix/Laveen AZ our garden did very well. But up here at 6800 feet the growing season is short and the pests are many! It's a learning experience that keeps us on our toes! We did get peppers, corn, peas, tomatoes etc. but not so bountiful.

The best hamburger? 1/4# lean beef patty & sauteed onion, topped w/ Swiss cheese on a toasted sesame seed bun. Maybe a little crisp lettuce don't hurt.

Bob you took me back about 65 years. Growing up on Saturday mornings an old station wagon would go through the neighborhood and kid would have a 4 ft +_ tray with a handle on it like a tool chest. Come to the door "Mater Boy!" Mom would open th door and go down the tray. Cukes, peppers and of course maters. All fresh picked the day before. I think most of life was better then, or I have selective memory.

Started slowly, did well for a short time despite too much rain. Fell off to nothing when the rain disappeared for two months. Still have one with no fruit and two grape tomato plants with fruit that hasn't matured. Guessing they like the weather a little cooler. Still have jalapenos making.

My best growth this year was my yard.
