Like many here, I suspect, I grew up not knowing anything about hearing protection. Many guns, mostly shotguns, and lots of loud rock concerts. Somewhere around 40 years ago I bought a S&W Model 57 .41 Magnum 8 3/8" barrel as a direct result of Clint Eastwood's 'Dirty Harry' character (I got a .41 just to be different). I had access to an old gravel pit and used to shoot there. I remember once I went to the pit and shot an entire box (50 rounds back then) in one session. I really couldn't hear much for three days!

Anyway I've been dealing with tinnitus for a long time. Most of the time I ignore it, just background noise, but sometimes the ringing really gets to me.

So, I recently called the tinnitus help line. There was no answer. It just kept ringing.

A zillion years ago I bought a new Ruger .41 Blackhawk as my first centerfire handgun. After two cylinders of factory ammo I returned to the shop and bought my first set of "ear muffs".

The audiologist who tested me prior to getting my first hearing aid said the the ringing would decrease if I used the aid full time. Unfortunately, I haven't done so but my unaided hearing hasn't gotten worse so I guess that's a plus. I'm up for either an upgrade or a second aid for free on my insurance and have been informed that the next generation of Miracle Ear will function with my Android phone w/o additional widgets. That's a plus since I use an in-the-ear phone device at least 50% of the time but still can't hear the conversations well.
A somewhat odd circumstance is the full bale alarm on my new to me JD baler seems to be the same tone as the constant ringing in my ears. I didn't even know there was an audible signal until one day I had my hearing aid in place and the darned thing nearly scared me out of the cab. I'd just depended on the visual blinking icon on the monitor up to then.

My ringing has seemed to go away most of the time since I got hearing aides 4 or so years ago.

Wakka Wakka!!!

I've been living with it for about 10 yrs, mine comes from 30yrs of power tools, I've got two different tones, one ear higher that the other one.

I don’t think I can remember not having tinnitus. It has been quite a few years since my last audiology appointment. I am starting to struggle more understanding voices when there are other background noises. Probably time for a hearing test.

If you are at that point, you may have already lost a good portion of your hearing BUT good hearing aids will help you. Without realizing it, I was lip reading fairly well according to the ME technician. When she hid her face as she pronounced words, the truth came out. I have 80-90% loss in the higher tones and 50-60% on the lower 2/3 of the scale. I had functioned at this level for nearly 30 years most of which was customer service related so had learned to 'lead' the conversation and lip read just to get along.

During my Army service, it was considered wimpy if we tried to used ear protection. Cigarette filters were the preferred ear plugs if you couldn't get a boll of cotton. Firing ranges prohibited ear protection, and live fire with tanks in support was especially ear splitting, especially when firing the 90 mm main gun.

So I've got that ringing. And tired of folks asking "Can't you hear that?" The little beeps on the coffee maker that lets me know the coffee is ready, the battery checkers little beeps, all go unnoticed by me.

One day.....................

I developed tinnitus a few years ago in my left ear which was my good ear. My right has been bad from birth. I’ve been struggling.
I had an appointment for Costco last month but couldn’t go since a coworker thought he may have been exposed to Covid so I rescheduled for this Tuesday the 5th. I hope they help.
I still work and some peoples voices are at just the right pitch to barely hear but not understand.
My 90 YO MIL just got hers and she loves them. I walked into the room this week while she was reading and said “Can you hear me?” Her head snapped up and she said “Yeah I heard you”. Before the aids I would had to yell.
It’s good to hear that tinnitus’s effects may be diminished with hearing aids.
Once I get my behind the ear aids I am going to get a lanyard that either goes from ear to ear or or one that clips onto your clothes, glasses.
My Mother thought she lost one at WalMart last Sunday and we spent an hour walking around looking for it. She was about in tears. She got hers from a hearing center and IIRC she paid about $4000. A lot of cash for a widow on fixed income. Luckily she only was only in the food section or I might still be there looking. Didn’t find it. I thought we might have to pass the hat among siblings to raise the replacement cost. The next day she called and said she found it. In the case. She only put one in.

Mine sounds like cicadas. Most noticeable at night. Getting tested at Costco for hearing aids in a few weeks. We'll see what they say and do.
That’s what mine sound like, with a flock of chirping birds interspersed now & then.

I was just tested today at Costco. Pretty much said what I thought. The graph showed my ears are hearing just about the opposite of each other. Where one was higher on the graph the other was lower, mostly.
Word recognition test was odd I thought. The ear with tinnitus scored 100% but the right ear only scored 70%.
I tried a set for a while and while the sound was different it was much better than without.
I ordered the Kirkland 10. $1399.00 with a 3 year lwarranty including loss. Lose them or break them and they’ll replace them once. Blue tooth enabled a there’s an app to adjust them. According to the rep. when you plug them in to charge they revert back to your original settings. They also have 4 mics the you can adjust for F-R balance.
I’m due to pick them up on Oct. 22.
I can’t wait to get them.

I've had hearing aids for nearly 20 years. Costco trumps them all. Less expensive by far and their staff is very well trained and capable. I've paid a whole lot more and got a whole lot less. I'm very happy with their service.

Back in 2012 I stepped off a plane in Italy. My left ear started ringing, It hasn't stopped since. I've gotten used to it. It doesn't bother me much at all anymore.

I look around at friends with serious health problems: type 1 diabetes, heart attack, back problems, etc.... and I realize.... I got it good. Really good.

Let it ring, baby!

I've had tinnitus since I was 20. It started probably from me playing in a rock band, then got worse from an accident I had in my Army training. Someone pulled the rope on an 8" gun without warning and I was standing right on the dead line. Woke up from the concussion in the hospital, and could not hear a thing for three days.

Now, I wear my ear protection when shooting, and have a pair of Walker's electronic ear muffs I use for hunting.
