Hearing aids and Tinnitus

I don't know how you guys rationalize a 'noise maker' while sleeping. I want to be able to recognize those 'bump in the night' sort of noises.
That is not an issue with white noise. Bumps still go bump. We aren't talking about a Metallica concert! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I've had tinnitus since November 1977 and over the years its increased and decreased . A year ago I found a website that has 8 examples of tinnitus. One day when my kids were here with their spouses, all in their 40s, I used that website to show my family what I hear all the time. They all were surprised by how loud I had to turn up the volume to hear 2 of the examples.

Yeah my hearing is crap.
I have not been diagnosed with tinnitus (at least I don't think so, if they said something about it I didn't hear it lol) but I'm sure I have it. Doesn't bother me too much but in the summer I have an air conditioner in my bedroom, in the winter time I use a noise machine. I've always preferred some sort of background noise. I have this one, it's very small but it works good.

I'm 70 and have had tinnitus for decades, but much worse the last 10 years. I wear Costco hearing aids and it helps a little bit. I don't like the Costco hearing aids, they don't fit and don't stay in place very well. Also they have some kind of wifi bluetooth technology so left and right can be controlled together. Seems like a bad idea having that communication going through my brain constantly....so I don't wear them unless I really need them.
I don't mind the constant ringing so much, but not being able to understand what people are saying is annoying.
My favorite word is what.

I'm 80 years old and do have some hearing loss and tinnitus. I have never had my hearing checked in the past 20 years or so. The only thing that bothers "me" is listening to TV. I can hear people talking but I can't understand what they are saying. Turning up the volume doesn't really help me much. My wife and I don't really fight about it but she complains because of the following. I will be reading something on my laptop and she will just start talking and I will ask her to repeat because I can't get tuned into her talking until she is half way through her conversation, so I ask her to repeat. Or she will start talking to me as she is leaving the room and facing away from me. So, I tell her that part of it is her fault, and you can guess how well that is accepted by her. :ROFLMAO:

If you're eligible for VA health care and haven't seen their audiologist, I recommend that you do so. The VA issues top-drawer hearing aids, and they offer quite a bit more also. And, their hearing aids are free. My current set is pushing 4 years old and are due for replacement in a few months, and the right one is having problems holding a charge (they're rechargeable). The Audiologist said that she would just order my new set a bit early, and then we'll have the old set refurbed to serve as a backup set. My current set has custom ear molds, and they both fit, and stay in place. They also issued me a bluetooth TV broadcaster that sends the TV audio direct to my hearing aids. In my experience, there is no 'cure' for tinnitus, but being able to hear and understand speech makes the tinnitus easier to tolerate.

The tech said many people have luck masking the tinnitus at night with playing soft sounds similar to a cd player. Amazon has several pages of different players and not that expensive . She said to avoid total silence, it just magnifies the tinnitus.
Been using this small sound machine for a couple weeks now, and I program it for 30 minutes and has really been helping both me and my wife to fall asleep quicker. Can't say for her small dog who also sleeps in her crate in the bedroom. ;)

I had a 5 stage hearing test at Costco yesterday lasting about 90 minutes. High frequency and background noise are my main problems . The tech downloaded my results into a set of Rexton Reach Plus sample aides and turned me loose in the store for a 'road test". Walked around the store for 15 minutes and after a very mild volume adjustment in the left side, was set. What an improvement over the Oticon aides I had gotten from another hearing service based out of an ear, nose and throat doctors office ! Not to mention my total price was about 1/3 the price, and better warranty and support .
I go back on the 20th to pick the new ones up, and fine tuned. We'll see ?

Tinnitus, since earliest childhood: I was in grade school when I had my little brother put his ear to mine so he could hear it.
The simple mind of an innocent child (sigh)
Mine are not the crickets, mine is a hot-August field of katydids SCREAMING en masse, and have always been.
Went to an ENT who said it was caused by inner-ear arterioles too small for standard, which forces blood through them at high velocity and causes that hissing sound. He looked at me and said he could prescribe a vasodilator ... like Diazepam.
I gave him an irritated look and said I was absolutely not going to sleep with Prince Valium, I'll just put up with it, and he looked halfway between pleased and offended.
I think he was testing to see if I was exhibiting drug seeking behavior.

These days they can run a test and determine if you have tinnitus. I don't know if it measures the severity or not, but they can tell if you suffer from it.

I've had tinnitus for years (actually decades) and most of the latest research points to it being more of a neurological problem as opposed to an ear problem. My ear doc said if he had the answer he'd be living on some private island.

I've had hearing loss and tinnitus for nearly 50 years and the VA has been wanting to give me hearing aids for years. The tinnitus is only noticeable when complete silence, I've grown used to it. About 20 years ago the VA quit giving me hearing tests as it only p!$$e$ me off, because once they start their tones and hums in the head phones I can't tell what is real. I finally told them that even after they have ended the test and I've removed the head set I'm still hearing the tones and high pitch humming so how can I answer accurately when I hear their test when it is going on all day everyday. The only benefit (if you want to call it that?) is that having hearing loss nearly my whole adult life I've learned to read lips rather well. I can eavesdrop on conversations across the room. I recall a scene from the Willie Nelson movie "Barbarossa" where he says "the Mexicans have a saying, 'That which cannot be remedied must be endured." For me that applies to life in general.

It wasn't until the mask mandates that I realized how bad my hearing was!

Well been dealing with hearing loss for quite awhile now, due to loud work environments, hot rods and riding Harley's for close to 50 years and shooting , not to mention old age, lol !
Anyway about 3 weeks ago, I was fitted for my first pair of hearing aids. Went to see the Audiologist today and have them "dialed in" and tweaked a little more. I'm also dealing with a mild case of Tinnitus in both ears, but the right being the worst.
The tech said there is no real cure for the Tinnitus, and offered a couple tips to help deal with it. Was just wondering if anybody has or is dealing with this and might have any ideas to help cope. Seems to be the worst at night, with complete silence, when trying to fall asleep.
Take very good care of your hearing and wear good ear protection or pay the price down the road. 🙁
There are medications that can help relieve tenitisis, hearing aids only assist in overcoming the audio threshold required to overcome the symptoms. White, pink, brown noise may assist you in relaxing to fall asleep, but they are not cures for tenitisis. Good luck shipmate, find what works for you, but the ringing never ends unfortunately. ☠️

I am about 3 weeks into trying one of those medications to help relieve my tinnitus , and so far, has had little to no affect . There are all kinds of so-called remedies out there, but I have little hope of any really helping.

I saw a video that claims they have something that has worked for tinnitus. You place a electric thermometer looking device in your mouth for a few hours per day and supposedly after a few months a good percentage of people were cured. https://www.lenire.com/what-is-lenire/

Here is what ChatGPT said about its use/cost:

The Lenire Tinnitus Treatment Device is relatively expensive and is usually purchased through an audiology clinic as part of a treatment program, not just as a standalone device.

Typical cost (United States)

  • About $3,000 – $5,000 total for treatment.
  • Many clinics charge around $4,000–$4,600, including evaluation, device programming, and follow-up visits.

What the price usually includes

The fee typically covers:
  • The Lenire device itself
  • Audiology evaluation and fitting
  • Programming customized to your tinnitus
  • Follow-up visits during the treatment period (often ~12 weeks)

Insurance

  • Most U.S. insurance plans do NOT cover it, so it is usually out-of-pocket.

Treatment length

Typical protocol:
  • 30 minutes twice daily
  • About 10–12 weeks of treatment.

I've been wearing hearing aids for just over a year. Mine connect to my iphone, and both the hearing aid app and the iphone offer different background noise options to "mask" the tinnitus. I used quotes, because it doesn't really mask anything, it gives your brain something else to focus on so it is not focusing on the nerve damage that is tinnitus. That's during the day. At night the wife and I put a PBS documentary on for background noise, or I use either thunderstorms or crashing waves on my Amazon device.
👍🏻
I’ve been using Oticon hearing aids that have the noise in the background for around seven years and I believe it helps a lot. One of mine just recently quit working and my tinnitus is back with a vengeance. They were expensive so I’m going to have to save up for another pair, hopefully find some cheaper.
