Time to Sell

Right now at least for today I think I might just sell off all of my 38s, 357s,9mm and maybe my 40s. I probably will keep my 10mm on up. Yesterday at the range I realized that I primarily shoot three pistol calibers. Those are .45 ACP, .45 colt, and .38 super. I will probably keep my .454 just because but I just don't shoot my 38 stuff. At 63 going on 64 I would rather start getting rid of the stuff that just sits there. Am I going nuts? I have thought about this before but never acted. What do y'all think?

Well, in this country, at least for now, you can do whatever your little heart desires. If you're not utilizing those calibers, and don't think you ever will be, then now might be the time to sell. Any young'uns that you might bequeath a few of your not used guns? If so, maybe now is the time to pass them on.

As you get older, and old Arthur comes a visiting, those .38's and 9's will be a godsend, and keep you shooting. Good luck with your decision.

Whatever works for you. I thinned down my stuff years ago when I left Alaska and quit hunting. I have four CF handguns left that I carry .380, 9mm, .40 and .45ACP plus two .22 Buckmarks I use for Bullseye (Precision) practice. Only two rifles left, a 10/22 Sport model, and a S&W AR. One 12ga shotgun. At my age (73) and where I live it seems enough. I'm not a collector these are shooting arms and if I don't shoot 'em what's the point.

I'm 75, and think you would be better off re-reading gramps' post above.

Everybody hits their "wall", albeit at different ages (mine was @ age 60), when drastic physical changes due to aging can make a person radically alter their life & shooting styles.

YMMV, but I ditched ALL my long & short boomers, after first gifting various members of my immediate family (children, grandchildren, etc) whatever gun of mine that they'd like to have.

A bonus was my getting to see them enjoy their inheritances before I go for my Dirt Nap.

I still shoot/hunt, but with much milder guns (.22, .250 & .30 cal & .20ga/.410 non-magnums).

Like Clint once said: "A fella's GOT to come to terms with his limitations"........ :mrgreen:

Hi...

I understand how the OP feels, but I respectfully disagree.
I will turn 62 in a couple of months and am currently dealing with my 3rd bout of cancer and the second in the last four years. FWIW, I am expected to make a full recovery from this cancer(lymphoma).

I am just now starting to regain some strength after two cycles of chemotherapy with more to come and while still undergoing radiation therapy.
I have no intention of giving up my shooting hobby despite my illness. This morning I went on a four shop tour of the local gun shops. Pretty productive trip...I picked up a two-gun El Paso speed rig for 2/3 the price listed on the El Paso website. While looking at the used revolver display I found a practically new Ruger BlackHawk in .41Mag for only $350.
I already have two other .41Mag revolvers, a S&W M57 and a BlackHawk.

Now, I have a third.

I also ordered a pair of Cimmaron SAA pre-war replicas in .44Spl. Do I need them??? Probably could get by just fine with
the 50 or so guns I already own but, I wanted them and I thought a nice pair of SAA clones might look really nice in my brand spanking new CAS gun belt.

No intention of giving up my shooting hobby until I am physically unable to continue. I probably won't be strong enough to do any pheasant, deer or bear hunting this year, but the plan is to regain my strength and stamina in time to resume hunting next year.

Even if I never am able to go hunting , again when I die my son will inherit all of my shooting/reloading and hunting stuff.
Since he is a very active and knowledgeable hunter and shooter,I know he will use and appreciate them.

I've been thinking about selling off some stuff too, only the 357, 9 and 22s are what I'd keep. At least some of them. Can't get me to sell of my 1911 though.

I understand completely, but I suggest you wait until after the election is over. If beast gets in prices will go up fer sure.
I have several same caliber arms and have no idea why. I have a list in the safe of the ones I want to give to family/friends in case of my demise. The rest I won't care about.
Back early 90's I got rid of anything I didn't shoot often except the collectables.

I understand the "Auther" thing. I walk on two replaced knees and hips. But as luck has it, I can still do my 50# curls and my grip exercise is set at 90. I reload so I can make the 45s mild to wild if things get too bad. I do need a little cash though. I want to buy another plane so I can fly up to Atlanta instead of making that 4.5hour drive. I am missing too much with my grandchildren. One is already 6, one is 4 next month and one was born in March. I think it is good advice to wait until after the election. After that, I think the mid-calibers might just go.

Very valid question! I have spent the past half century collecting and now that I am approaching 70, guns are getting pushed in the background. I will always need basic protection and that might look like few 1911's, a SW 642, a few small 9mm pistols and a few of the collection that I am fond of. If Hillary is chosen, a buying panic would generate buying interest......an opportunity to sell a few. Your interest in high-intensity stuff may diminish in a few years and those 38/9mm may look more attractive.

Maybe keep a 9mm because ammo's relatively cheap and quite plentiful most of the time.

I might keep my 3rd gen Smiths. I have those in 9mm, 40, 10mm, and 45. It would be hard to break up that group. But my 38 Smiths, 357 Smiths and Rugers might get listed.

I just finished going the other way. I did keep 2 1911's and a 44 mag. I'm 70.
