Pardon my ignorance, but isn't AI code?
Sort of. But not like code as it use to be. It's close to being code similar to how your brain is coded. It learns and stores sight, sound, touch, and perhaps smell and adapts on the fly to non-repetitive tasks and situations, much like people do from the time of birth. And like human kids it will make mistakes, and sometimes learn things the hard way.

The USAF recently pitted an AI enabled pilotless plane against a piloted adversary out in the Nevada desert in a dog fight. This is something they've been doing for at least a couple years.

If you look at what GunnyGene sent me in #33 I think you'll see people losing jobs, not being different. At least in the company in the article.
Effect on the job market is the subject of much speculation right now, and I doubt anyone really knows how it will shake out. It's going to be chaotic for at least a couple years, ditto with the stock market, and no doubt some surprises along the way to AGI and beyond. Trumps announcement about the giant data center in Texas, if it goes in, will need it's very own nuclear power plant to provide electricity. Other data centers are also looking at doing the same These things are power hogs and they get hungrier everyday, and the grid is just about maxed out. Here's one article about nukes for data centers, there are many others, including restarting a plant in NC.

It is all assignments, conditionals, branching, and I/O.
I think the technical/engineering details are of lesser importance than the social/economic/national security impact of these systems. The CEO of Anthropic spoke about this at Davos this past Tuesday, and many others have the same concerns.

On Tuesday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted that AI models may surpass human capabilities "in almost everything" within two to three years, according to a Wall Street Journal interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Speaking at Journal House in Davos, Amodei said, "I don't know exactly when it'll come, I don't know if it'll be 2027. I think it's plausible it could be longer than that. I don't think it will be a whole bunch longer than that when AI systems are better than humans at almost everything. Better than almost all humans at almost everything. And then eventually better than all humans at everything, even robotics."

Amodei co-founded Anthropic in 2021 with his sister, Daniela Amodei, and five other former OpenAI employees. Not long after, Anthropic emerged as a strong technological competitor to OpenAI's AI products (such as GPT-4 and ChatGPT). Most recently, its Claude 3.5 Sonnet model has remained highly regarded among some AI users and highly ranked among AI benchmarks.

During the WSJ interview, Amodei also spoke some about the potential implications of highly intelligent AI systems when these AI models can control advanced robotics.

"[If] we make good enough AI systems, they'll enable us to make better robots. And so when that happens, we will need to have a conversation... at places like this event, about how do we organize our economy, right? How do humans find meaning?"

He then shared his concerns about how human-level AI models and robotics that are capable of replacing all human labor may require a complete re-think of how humans value both labor and themselves.

"We've recognized that we've reached the point as a technological civilization where the idea, there's huge abundance and huge economic value, but the idea that the way to distribute that value is for humans to produce economic labor, and this is where they feel their sense of self worth," he added. "Once that idea gets invalidated, we're all going to have to sit down and figure it out."

The eye-catching comments, similar to comments about AGI made recently by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, come as Anthropic negotiates a $2 billion funding round that would value the company at $60 billion. Amodei disclosed that Anthropic's revenue multiplied tenfold in 2024.

Even with his dramatic predictions, Amodei distanced himself from a term for this advanced labor-replacing AI favored by Altman, "artificial general intelligence" (AGI), calling it in a separate CNBC interview from the same event in Switzerland a marketing term.

Instead, he prefers to describe future AI systems as a "country of geniuses in a data center," he told CNBC. Amodei wrote in an October 2024 essay that such systems would need to be "smarter than a Nobel Prize winner across most relevant fields."

On Monday, Google announced an additional $1 billion investment in Anthropic, bringing its total commitment to $3 billion. This follows Amazon's $8 billion investment over the past 18 months. Amazon plans to integrate Claude models into future versions of its Alexa speaker.

The sci-fi literature about thinking robots predates Terminator by about 2500 years or more. Ancient Greek, Chines, Hindu, and other cultures stories are replete with such tales. More recently Azimov published I, Robot in 1950. Humanity has been traveling this road for a very long time, and the destination is just around the corner.

My point was Terminator brought it into the current consciousness. And showed it to be evil. Most folks aren't really familiar with older Hollywood portrayals of the more distant past. And certainly not the literature of Ancient Greece.

I got your point. Just adding some historical context to this. Where we are at this moment in time, is the result of all that has gone before.

Anyone remember the TV movie from around 1970, "Colossus, the Forbin Project"? Prescient. Two super computers become self aware and take over the planet.

Terminator was not the first to address this. Other Sci Fi thrillers also used the theme. My fav was Colossus: The Forbin Project, 1970.
There was another post on the subject awhile back, I listed a number of movies based on the idea of AI, so it's not a new concern/suspect subject.

Robots wanting to become human... Data was both good and evil depending on which model you were dealing with. And why didn't the bad Data just take over the ships controls and shut down the life support. He wouldn't even have to worry about the smell later.
 
Recall that a "computer" is nothing more than a bunch of rocks (used by certain tribes for calculations), the basic is/was off-on, ones and zeros. Yeah AI is the new kid on the block BUT it is an old concept in the computing 'world'. AND it started as human written code!
 
I repeat that I have yet to hear or read of anything which supports the idea that a computer, no matter how fast it can operate and no matter how much data it can scan and store, will suddenly awake and become a conscious, thinking being. But having computers misinterpret data and set off a nuclear exchange is not so impossible to imagine.
 
I think as far as just recall of memory, WATSON beat Ken Jennings. So it has surpassed human intelligence in that aspect. The ability in robotics has been able to duplicate human tasks. The ability to generate a near perfect duplicate human "profile," in cyber space is here. The ability for AI to "think" for itself is on the verge of reality with quantum computing.
The human race needs to step back and look atvthe bigger picture at "what" is human life. With manual dexterity labor actually being a good thing in our lives. Lack of it for some creates obesity and other mental health issues physical activity has benefits. Having technology resolve problems that we have the ability to solve, maybe not as fast, but it can be done. That process of problem solving has value in critical thinking process. We need to be in control of AI and not AI controlling us.
The problem is the rich can survive because they can afford to acquire that technology and control the less wealthy. When it comes to that point, apocalypse will occur and the survival of the fittest will revert to ruling. Just my thoughts.
 
I was the OP, and as I said in the beginning, I was just wondering what other's opinions were.

WELL, my worst fears have come true.

My wife has had cancer, but is now cancer free. Thank God. But in the process she has been advised to see many doctors, one of which is a Cardiologist. (blah, blah, blah, he gets his fees and I think he's only in it for the money)

Last year my wife's cholesterol was 146. The "doctor" advised her to take lipitor. Kidding me?, but he had a plausible answer.

This year her EKG showed that she had a heart attack. We scurried to get more tests scheduled, an MRI, etc.

When she called back and left a message, his answer was so sorry, so sorry, The EKG was read by AI. I never reviewed it.

We are now looking for a new cardiologist.

My initial thought was that AI was the work of the devil. Now I'm sure.
