when I get out of car, I usually look for someone finishing putting bags in their car and offer to take their cart back in for them.
However, this Southern Boy was up North and was cussed out when I tried. when I entered store I saw the reason why, the store charged 50C for a cart and gave back 25c when returned to rack

So if there are special places to leave your cart in the parking lot you are still supposed to return it inside the store? I don't get that.

I take my Dad (he's 91) to do his grocery shopping every Sunday morning. I park so it is easy for him to get to the store and back (he has a tough time moving even with a walker, but by God, he wants to do his own shopping). I leave him at the truck and go and get our carts (his then defacto walker) and we go in the store. Once done, back to the truck and unload the groceries. He gets in the truck and I take the carts either to the cart drop off or to the store, whichever is closest. There are some many people that just leave the cart by the car and drive off, even if taking it to the cart drop off OR back to the store would take a grand total of 30-60 seconds. Heck even when I take it to the cart drop off if the carts are just helter-skelter I straighten them up putting like carts together so it is easier for someone (or the store employee) to get them. But I guess that is just me, most just get close and give the cart a shove in the general direction.

I would be willing to bet that everyone on this Forum takes the carts to where they belong. It is just who we are. :wink:

I do that too and sometimes I grab a cart in the parking lot and push it in the store when I go shopping. These days you have to be sure to wipe down the darn things before using them though. :DRoninPA said:

Some stores I visit have simply dangerous parking lots. Those are the times I do leave the cart. However I don’t go to those stores very often at all. I do return the carts, simply because I try and get in extra walking steps. For example parking over in the back 40.

Shop at ALDI's . You put a quarter in the slot and the little chain releases. When you return the cart and click the little chain, you get a quarter back. If you try to grab a cart in the parking lot, you better have a quarter to hand to the current possessor of said cart.

it is my instinct to return a cart to the store or cart station and I almost always do so. However, if it is inconvenient for some reason, I do not beat myself up for leaving it in some out-of-the-way place because they have people whose JOB is retrieving shopping carts. If we ALWAYS returned the carts to the store, someone would probably lose their job. We, as consumers, pay for this service, whether from a charge/credit system mentioned above or overall pricing. Make no mistake, ALL operating expenses are eventually paid for by the customer, ....YOU.

I have to agree with the original post.... not returning the cart to the bin in the lot is a sign of just plain stupid lazy.... I see it all the time... and I have a dent in the side of my car from some idiot who did this and the cart decided it seems to roll down hill and hit it....
Like Jimbo and others, up until recent times, If I'm was headed to the front of the store and saw someone through or almost through unloading I'll take their cart from them and I would often pull one out of the bin if it was on my way.
I have an idea and if elected will propose a law.... we'll use the various stores parking lot security cameras to identify these shopping cart goobes and arrest them and put them all on a train to camp to get educated. (I was going to say re-educated... but since common sense never took hold we will have to start from the beginning.)

I have to agree with Blume357 on this. The other thing that is upsetting is the people that use the motorized carts (as I do) and take them out of the store (though each has a sign attached stating IN STORE USE ONLY) and leave them.

Kevin, That is a new one. I have never been in a parking lot so dangerous that I was afraid to return the cart. Seems it would be just as dangerous on the way to the car. :wink:

Just a thought here..... It is 'just who we are' fer sure. Perhaps it has something to do with us (almost all of us) perhaps (again) being just a tad 'anal'? I mean, do we 'hand weigh' our powder charges; use Renaissance Wax; slug our bore(s) and measure our cylinder throats; disassemble and clean/lube our guns..... Never ever skimp on a pre-flight check.... I could go on, but I won't.

The only times I haven’t returned a cart to the coral was when my kids were little. 2 toddlers and an infant. Can’t leave them alone in the car, can’t safely walk them across the parking lot. Usually in those cases I parked near the coral so I could return it without leaving them alone.
At some point I read a story I can’t find now. So the details might be off. Pretty sure it was about Mark Twain he had a gate in front of his house with no fence. So everyone walked around it.
The story is he would sit on his front porch. He always refused interviews until one day someone asked and he agreed to give an interview. Later when asked why he decided to let that man interview him. Mark Twain replies. “He was the first person to use the gate”.
The point is some people do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do.
