Going back to Idaho, I was anxious to see the mountains, shoot, drink a few huckleberry shakes, and spend some time with friends, sixshot and callshot. However, one of the side trips I was excited about was to meet the matriarch that is responsible for our very own "sixshot". Everyone loves sixshot. His stories, photos, and sense of humor are second to none. Or so I thought........
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Dayl Thompson, Mom of Dick Thompson, aka, sixshot. I call her the "First shot", because without this beauty, there would be no sixshot. And that, would be a travesty.
As we approached the Assisted living home, I spied a lady siting in a wheelchair, soaking up the afternoon sun. It was Dicks Mom. She said she likes to be outside as much as possible for the fresh air and not to disturbe her roommate. The first thing I noticed was the uncanny resemblance between Dick and his Mom. The second was the sunny disposition. The apple sure doesn't fall far from the tree.
Mom is 90 years young, pretty much confined to a wheelchair, and has a huge sense of humour, and still has a fierce sense of independence. Dick told me this year the assisted living home took the residents to the annual 4th of July parade. After the festivities, the "First shot" was no where to be seen. This didn't alert the staff of the home, as the "first shot" is known to roam, when the urge strikes. Later that evening, "First shot" was spotted motoring home with a fist full of scratchoff tickets in her mitt, and a huge mischievous grin on her face. This story speaks volumes of the woman, and tickled me immensely.
Since I missed "First shots" 90th Birthday, I brought along $20.00 worth of scratchoff tickets to her. You woulda thought I gave her a diamond ring. After scratching the first ticket, which was a dud, the "First shot" laughed, and said, "BUMMER!" Again, this tickled the heck out of me.
Here's Samantha giving Mom some scratchoff tickets and a hug!
We had a nice visit. The "First shot "is a first rate story teller. She reminded me of a modern day Sixshooter Sal. She reminesced about living in the wilds of Idaho, shooting geese with a rifle, always laughing while doing so. Most people laugh with their mouths, some with their bellies, but this lady laughs with her eyes. They just light up, and sparkle, when she laughs.
My favorite story of the "First shot" involves Mom riding a horse into the General store in Henry for liquid refreshment. She actually rode inside the store, got the beverages, paid, and rode out. Someone snapped a picture of the event, and it hung on the wall of the store for years. Whata woman !
They say behind every successfull man, is a great woman. Dick is doubly blessed in his wife Ruth Ann, and especially the "First shot", Mom.
This was by far one of my favorite chapters in "True Tales" of the Idaho kind.
