The Ejector Housing Flew Off

I know this has happened to many folks but it really caught me by surprise. The screw sheared off on my NM Bisley 44 and the housing, the spring, the ejector rod and the screw head went flying. I got the parts and have ordered another screw now all I have to do is get the screw out of the barrel. Guess I will have to buy a small easy-out.

Should I make sure there is no tension on the housing when I reinstall and how do you adjust that? When I put it back together by hand there is a gap that has to be pulled down by the screw. I am thinking a little filing on the nipple that fits into the frame should take care of getting the ejector housing to sit flat along the barrel?

Heck, and they were pretty mild loads I was shooting. :roll: :roll:

I wonder if the screw was loose and that's way it sheared.

I'm no expert on the matter, but;
All of the sheared screws that I've dealt with involved steel ERH's that fit too loose where the end with the "step down" enters the frame.
I've also noted that the barrel taper on various Ruger SA's don't match. That kinda tells me that one shouldn't assume that all Ruger ERH's are interchanhable without fitting.
My own OM-357 has a NM (steel) ERH which fits somewhat the same as you've described your's. So far, it's not given a problem...but...that could be because the "gap" that mine exibits is not the same as the gap on yours. Or it could be that I only shoot .38 Spl loads out of mine, so the recoil force that acts on the screw is much less than on yours???.......something about a body at rest tends to stay at rest?.....

There should be no gap to take up with the screw. In my experience, the barrels are straight tapered so the ERH must be warped a bit or the nipple that enters the frame is off set. Place it on a flat surface and see if it rocks. If it does, either bend it straight or file away the high spot. Do what ever is necessary to get a black-out fit and the screw should hold. I'm pretty sure the screw was tight because I checked all of the screws the last time I cleaned it, only about a week ago.

I figure the little nipple part of the housing that fits into the frame could use a little touched-up so that the whole housing will sit flat against the barrel. But I won't make it loose either.

This gun used to also have a problem with the base pin jumping out until I did a little work on the latch.
