The BFR is a bit larger -- like a Blackhawk that's been lifting weights, so it is consequently heavier, but not a bunch. It's beefier in all the right places.

I've had a couple still have the 44, heavier top strap. Nice solid gun.

I have one in .45-70 and recently shortened the barrel from 7.5 inches to 5.2. Really a nice shooter and the shorter barrel makes it easier to draw from my shoulder rig.
Only thing missing that I would like to add is the cylinder rotation click like my other SA Rugers!
I also added wood grips for a Super Blackhawk

I have a 10" 45 70. Why? I am older now, never had one and this one showed up. Need to figure out what to shoot in it...............(?)

big, well built, strong, a little heavy but surprisingly well balanced (for what it is), and more accurate than the shooter more often than not. I have a 45-70 w/ a 10" barrel. The grip and sights not bad but could be better. I scoped mine and am thinking about a Huntington grip mod.

I love mine.....the 500 with 7.5 inch barrel is murder on the hands with full house loads. The 30-30 is a joy to shoot and the 45-70 with trapdoor loads (light) can be shot all day long as a bonus you can buy a 450 Marlin cylinder.

I see nothing that even closely resembles a dump truck.

Wished I had known of BFR's before buying most of my Ruger revolvers. BFR's have better triggers and are very accurate. Built much stronger than the Rugers as well.
Yes, they cost more. But IMO are worth every penny.

OK.. here's a video of my water jug test of my .45-70 BFR after I cut the barrel to 5.2 inch.
Was shooting Hornady .325 gr. flex tip ammo. About as hot as you will find in off the shelf ammo other than Buffalo Bore.

Cant help with the blued but you can always send one (like I did) to Jack Huntington for him to do his grip mod and install custom grips.

I like the Bisley job that Huntington can do on these. I'll be sending mind out for that. It's more like what you get on the Freedom Arms.

I'm going to have Jack build my next custom (full blue Bisley .500JRH on a 50th .44 flat-top) and his grip work is awesome but the grip mod on the BFR ain't gonna do it for me. I have fundamental issues with the Super Blackhawk/BFR grip profile.

Ever shoot it through a chronograph to see what you lost in fps? I'm curious. Some say the 7.5 is already a waste of gun powder, and 45-70 riflemen say the same about the 10. Looks-wise, it's great. It looks a hellava lot more balance than either stock model.

Haven't run it past my chrony yet,but it the bullet did stop in the 8th gallon jug,almost going thru it.
I would say it still is carrying some power. That round out of the 7.5 barrel is around 1400-1500 from what I read. Will give it a shot and check it!

I've shot .44Colt loads through 7 or 8 gallon jugs. A 240gr SWC/HP at 750fps.

Now if I wanted more power,a .450 Marlin cylinder can be fitted by Magnum Research or just some hotter loads equivalent to that pressure rating in .45-70
