Swapping grip frames

I am going to change the small grip frames on my 4-5/8" SBH and NMBH revolvers to the Dragoon style grip frames.

I just can't get used to those teeny little grips. They seem like they are sized for a small boy.

Are all the guts interchangeable? Or do I need to replace anything else besides of course, the grips?

You got it; Grip Frames with the appropriately sized grip panels.
I have small hands and still swap on the Super Blackhawk grip frame on any gun with a "larger" caliber.....

I have done multiple Original Size VAQUEROS to either a DRAGOON or a HUNTER...and a couple of BISLEY conversions also. Take a closer look at the HUNTER...all the virtues of the DRAGOON and none of its alleged flaws! I have four 5.5 inch Original Size VAQUEROS with HUNTER grip frames..in 357 and 44.

A cheaper alternative is to get a custom grip with a flat bottom, rather than the RUGER factory bevel. Caryc and other makers offer this. I am using EAGLE GRIPS Gunfighter model on several guns...black buffalo horn on either blue or stainless looks good to me.

Do you have SS or blue guns? If you you want a larger grip w/o the knuckle busting dragoon square trigger guard, use the Hunter 44 large SBH sized grip frame. It has a standard round trigger guard but only comes in SS. If you have blue guns I can recommend a professional who specializes in bluing SS.

Thanks. My guns are SS. I chose the Dragoon style b'cause I figured since the back portion the TG goes straight and actually curves very slightly away from the finger, that there would be less of a problem with it banging back into the finger.

When I grip these small butt Rugers, my finger actually touches the back of the TG. I figured the Dragoon has more room behind the TG.

Am I wrong?

Are the grip panels for the Dragoon and the Hunter model the same?

My 7 1/2" Mag-Na-Ported SBH bust my knuckles every time .I'm just gonna have my gunsmith roundoff the trigger guard ,that way I still have the large grip pannels just like the hunter but don't have to have the grip frame fitted to the gun and I'm going to have it plated in sterling silver anyway .I'll have the best of both worlds ,the big grip ,and the look of the sterling silver too and no more busted knuckles .

I really suggest you shoot a gun with that dragoon grip before making your decision. It's that corner that comes up and raps your finger as the gun rolls up in your hand under recoil! I've seen SBHs with that corner ground off for that very reason. The round trigger guard is much better and yes the grip panels are the same.

Yes, the Super Blackhawk's traditional grip frame's panels interchange with those on the Hunter.

Can I put a hunter frame on an OM SBH?

Yes, it will bolt up but you need to make Flatgates's simple adapter for the trigger return spring. Here's the one I made:

When you order, also request the NM trigger return spring pivot pin to retain the adapter thru the small hole shown or use a piece of drill bit of the right diameter.
The grip frames come oversize on the sides and the 'ears' around the base of the hammer. They have to be sanded and polished down flush with the frame.

Did you try Brownell's?

In the beginning I did when I was going for the Dragoon grip. They were more money and out of stock too.

Then, when I decided to go with the Hunter grip frame, I went back to Brownell's and they had those in stock.

I ordered 2 on line. Then after I got my order confirmation, I looked at the site again, and they now list the Hunter as out of stock.

Maybe I got the last two? Anyway, I cancelled my order with Midway.
