Suspicious package

Got this in my POB this morning, addressed to me. Sent from some place in India. I haven't ever ordered anything from India. My Spidy Sense kicked in. Pretty light weight, soft sided but felt like something semi-ridgid inside. No ticking or rattling. Discussed it with the postmaster, and decided to bring it home. Asked my wife if she'd ordered anything from India - Nope. Didn't have a clue what was in it. Seriously considered calling the bomb squad or setting it out back for some long range shotgun practice.

Would you have opened it?

As I was about to administer Option "B" to it, my wife says: "Wait, I ordered something from Amazon a few weeks ago." So off I go to Amazon.com, and sure enough she had ordered something about the size of the package.

Decided to carefully slit it open a little and take a peek. Nothing went bang or sprayed out, so opened it up. It was the kitchen box grater she'd ordered.

She now knows I'm paranoid. :wink: :lol:

I'd be a soft target. I get several packages a week for work, and my wife gets many from her shopping forays. I often don't know what the office is sending me. So, I open them right up. Then again, so far the general public hasn't been terribly effected by bombs and nerve agents being sent by post or parcel delivery.

We are getting more and more packages also. Heck, we've even ordered eggs and milk on Amazon. BUT, we don't receive packages like the one pictured.

You're right, we don't. But I've been on the receiving end of this kind of random crap a few times many years ago in VN - only those were the real deal. Once burned, twice shy as the saying goes - for the rest of my life.

Looking like that . . . . not without research FIRST.

I get a fair amount of "stuff" from Amazon and at least 98% of it comes
in a box clearly marked as from Amazon.

I even check the return address to see where it comes from.


P.S. When I do order, one of my checks is where the item comes from.
I have refused to order several items when they do . . not . . say
"fulfilled" by Amazon. Non "Amazon" items seldom come in a timely
manner (with a few exceptions). :shock:

You were right to be a little suspicious about that one, it's not paranoid. It looks like a big drug shipment, frankly, and without knowing about the kitchen grater you were correct to be suspicious. It's a terrible packaging job - very unprofessional and I would have thought pretty much along the same lines.

At one point in a galaxy far, far away I used to work for UPS at a big facility of theirs. My job was to try and identify and fix packages that had either burst open during shipment or were falling apart and couldn't be delivered, and we'd occasionally get stuff like this and have to think along the same lines. Gloves on, all the antennas out, try to identify what's inside it through the shipping history before you probe it. So don't feel badly.

It kind of reminds me of that moment in Beverly Hills Cop (I'm dating myself here) where Axel Foley pulls up to the Harrow Club in his Nova and tells the concierge: "Park it someplace nice because all this [stuff] happened the last time I parked here."

Postscript: By far the worst shipments in the world for anyone working at UPS are the ones that are shipped in flimsy containers particularly while carrying liquids or semi-liquids. I had a box of glass jars full of homemade pickles come off the belt one day and they were surrounded with pieces of paper in a cardboard box meant to handle 1/10th the weight. They all whacked, clattered and jambanged up against each other, the glass jars shattered into approximately 25 million pieces, and pickle juice went *everywhere*. How that shipment made it into the system in the first place was a subject of a management inquiry.

Those are really strange, particularly when they've been sent from Bayonne, NJ. You're there thinking..."What the heck did I ever do to get a package from Bayonne, NJ?" :lol:

Gunny: To be honest, Nope, that would have never crossed my mind. If it were then so be it. I am right with God and death is not a thing to fear. Do I want to hang out a bit longer? Sure, but I am not going to live a life of suspicion and questions. I don't suspect packages or deliveries. We do a lot of on line shopping and receive a lot of packages, if I were to wonder on every one we would never make it though the day.
