My thoughts on the matter: .......The nanny state, pure 'n simple....and nowadays it's worse because gov.com has crawled into bed with the insurance companies....So I dunno, call me calloused I guess, but I believe that we were all better off before big brother decided that we all "deserved" to be protected from all of life's dangers, be they real, imagined, large or small....and looking back to the pre-Great Society years, I'm real-sure that most people were a heck of a lot smarter back before all of this got started....meaning that it's had a measurable dumbing-down effect....It's just the opposite of how nature intended things to be, that's why.

Hey how many of you remember your first days of school????? In 1948 in first grade, we had to use FAT pencils and the scissors with the round non pointed end. You had better not get caught by the teacher running with a pencil in your hand. But it was OK to play on the Monkey Bars which I cut my head on one of the assembly bolts. SOOOOOOOOOOOO many things in the playground that you knew could hurt you. Like trying to go all the way around (a loop) on the swing or seeing who could jump off the highest, getting off your end of the teeter totter, falling onto the dirt/gravel while pushing the marry-go-round fast. There are many more that we survived with just a little blood and band-aids.
So, yea we have always had safety rules of some type :) Most of us knew what would hurt you and the dumb ones that didn't well they soon learned.

It's not kids, it's due to thieves.

Go look at the golf ball aisle at Walmart and notice all the empty stashed packages.

As for thieves and golf balls, I didn't know golf balls were 'edible', so who's stealing them, and who is profiting from their theft?

Kids steal the golf balls and sell them at golf courses. Same kids who dive into golf course ponds to scavenge baptized golf balls. $1 each for decent ones, or more for the top brands. (ProV1, etc.). Kids can collect $15 to $30 a day doing this. Walmart's golf balls are indistinguishable from pond balls, both to golfers and Walmart's fraud investigators.

Golfers buy them. Kids set up on the Xth hole tee box. Golfer needs more bullets (after dunking 3 on previous water hole). $3 bucks for 3 best balls. Done deal. Both buyer and seller are happy.

Country clubs prosecute golf ball poachers for theft (people who dive in the Club's water holes for balls). Why? The golf club sells the right to retrieve wet balls to contractors. Contractors get to keep and sell the balls to anyone who wants them (including the club's golfers). It's a money maker for the club and contractor.

Many of us remember the tylenol days but securing donuts, coffee and other non poisonous products to make it dangerous to open has gone too far though I am a proponent of tamper evident packaging. I'd like to know how many ER visits are made yearly from package opening accidents.

I was unaware something must be edible to be stolen. What are they doing with the balls? Some say they're selling them but that's a lot of work for little return and thieves don't like work. Besides, they're taking a three-ball sleeve out of a dozen box here so I surmise they use them to play golf. Sometimes they just take all the sleeves of goof balls from the box and put them in a box made for crappy balls. Buy the crappy box with good balls and sell the dozen on FBM or eBay, etc. I have never seen anyone selling balls on a golf course but I am sure it happens.
