I'm confused. I bought a used Super RedHawk in 480 Ruger. My question is what year did Ruger start building these guns in this caliber? It looks like the gun wa built in 2001. Was this the first year for this caliber? I thought I read the 480 Ruger came out in 2003? Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum!
The earliest known serial number for a Super Redhawk was for one with a 7-1/2" bbl, with a number of 551-65586 which was built in 2000. However,,, they don't show up in the printed catalog until 2001.

I think mine was from 2001. It has the "Target Grey" finish, and sometimes sticky extraction - depending on the ammo.

Paid $550 for it, but it didn't have the rings. Called Ruger and they had them for a premium price. Cost me over $90 price and S/H!!! Not sure of the DOB!

This article in Wiki says 2003 for the introduction of the .480.

Like a lot of wiki articles, it may not be 100% reliable but it is in the ballpark.

Wikipedia is wrong, it was 2001.

Taffin's big article on handloading the .480 was in the Sept/Oct 2001 issue of A/H.
