I've got a ss Super Blackhawk that has the dragoon or square trigger guard that I'd like to change to an xr3red that I already purchased. I tried it on the gun but the hammer is right back in the web of my hand when cocked.I guess I need a blackhawk hammer.My question is do I have to get a different trigger or can I use the trigger that's on the gun. It's a sweet trigger pull now and I'd use it more if it wasn't for that dragoon trigger guard. Or could I heat it with a torch off the gun,bend,and regrind the flat sides. Best wishes,Glen

I change the hammers in all my New Model shooting guns to SBH. Even the new Vaquero hammers will swap. Both MidwayUSA and Brownells carry them in stock.

A regular Blackhawk hammer should be an easy part swap and just "drop in" most likely. I have done that with SBH hammers in my 357 and 45 Colt Blackhawks and kept everything else the same (trigger, grip frame, springs).
BUT doing this might not solve your original problem as the Blackhawk hammer spur may not be any shorter than the Super Blackhawk hammer you have now. By changing the shroter XR3 Red grip for the square backed "Dragoon" grip, you may have changed the way you now grip the gun and are placing the web of your hand higher up the grip closer to where the cocked hammer spur is close to the grip frame.
If the square backed trigger guard is the problem (it rapps your knuckle, etc), then you could try the "Hunter" style grip frame. It is the same as the "Dragoon" grip but has a rounded trigger guard. They are available at Midway from time to time but would require final fitting to your revolver.
