Hi folks, A friend of mine says he knows of a Super Blackhawk .44 mag for sale. Says that it was bought in 1974, 7 1/2 ", square trigger guard, Serial # 81-109xx, in very good condition, no box. asking price is $350. I tried to find a manufacturing date on Rugers web site but had some problems. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about this gun, what to look for that may be concerning or what it may be worth. Thank you very much.

If it has a square trigger guard I think he has a Super BLACKHAWK single action revolver and not a SRH. Also if it is a 1974 gun, it would definitely be a SBH as the Redhawks or Super Redhawks weren't made back then.

A price of $350 is pretty good in today's market. Last year I would have passed but this year, you'd be hard pressed to find a new model Super for that.
I agree, would be hard to find one cheaper.

Being a 74, there is also a possibility of high polish and recessed chambers..

All blue New Model Super Blackhawks have had high polish, but the recessed chambers is a definite possibility as about the first 40,000 NM Supers had that feature. An 81-10xxx range gun should also have a smooth trigger. At about 81-13xxx it was changed to a trigger with a grooved face.

I recently bought one in the same catagory. High polish, smooth trigger. firing pin notch in the cylinder, and 81-10xxx S/N. Ruger customer service sonfirmed that it was built in 1973 and shipped in December 1973. I couldn't get my $360.00 out fast enough.

I had one of those and it was a "tack driver"! In a weak/broke moment it got traded off for something else I needed worse......... :roll:

If it locks up tight, Hammer doesn't push off when at full cock, has little or no 'wiggle' in the cylinder, shows minimal blue wear, no rust freckling, etc. it would probably be a gun of low usage and good care. I'd not hesitate at $350. You can usually pick up a Ruger and tell if it is good condition by cycling the action a few times.
