Summer Is Gone

Not looking forward to another rough Winter.

North MO had a very light frost Oct 1-2-3 and 13-14. Weather forecasters are predicting a "widespread killing frost" for Thursday which is right in line with the average "frost date" of Oct 15 or 16.
The last two weeks have been a gift from nature for the row crop farmers. Warm temps with lower humidity and some wind has provided a good harvest window. A hard frost was needed to kill some of the persistent weeds and knock the last leaves off some of the later soybeans. Some of those beans are destined to fail due to immaturity but a few more days before frost wasn't going to change that.
I'm predicting a more difficult winter for my area than last winter. Just a feeling. With that thought, I'm getting ready to insulate and windproof at least the north and west walls. I intended to add new siding and windows but the wet summer prevented that and now I'm out of time.

Yep! Winter is on the way. My hummingbird family has left the area and headed South. Time to set out the additional feeders and bring in the ones used my the Rubythroat family. I certainly hope and pray that this winter isn't a cold as the last one. As for snow...a few light dustings rather than 'up to your wallet' would also be nice.

Well fellows and gals, its not even close to winter here in Texas. Yesterdays temp was 95, and the same for today and tomorrow. Maybe by Friday or the next it will cool off to 89.

I suppose the end of next month all them Snowbirds from up north and Canada will be down clogging up our roads and grocery store aisles. We'll be hearing "That's not the WAY we do it UP NORTH". IF you ever got your toes run over by one of the motorized carts or had an aisle blocked cause two of them decided to discuss something OTHER THAN shopping in the middle of an aisle, you might not CARE about the money. Yep, a huge difference between the north and the south/southwest. 95 here today as well and extremely dry again. Hope they get that Bastrop fire under control, don't need a repeat.

Sorry, Pamela, just couldn't resist! A few years ago a buddy and I were at a vintage car race, and met a fellow who'd retired from Ford, but had been with them when Ford bought into Volvo. He told how some of the engineers he worked with took two Volvos out on the track, to see if the cars really WERE as slow as everybody said, or it was just the drivers! When they flashed a chip on one of them, a wagon, it gained almost 25 mph! Hmmm...

THEN he said that little boost was enough to get the car up to 150, and they had their answer.

Well, the '87 760 GLE I had for a long time had LOTS of power with its injected V-6 and handled like a sports car on the corners; I use to drive a '69 Alfa Spider, so I know a bit abut sports cars and speed. My '98 S-70 will DOWN SHIFT at 70 mph+ if I have the trannie in the S (Sport) setting and put my foot down hard on the accelerator. ZOOOOMMM !! It aint no slouch around a curve either.
Ford DID kinda screw them up, good thing they finally sold it off.

Pamela, SHHHH!!! You don't want to get your Volvo Drivers Club card revoked when they hear you talking like that! You know there are many places where Volvo drivers are required to drive slower than hyper-miling Prius drivers, right? Or so it seems, and the stereotypes tend to support! We won't EVEN go into the "approved" bumper stickers for that crowd!

:lol: That's funny! we just got through our foliage season and we have to put up with all the southerners creeping and weaving along the roads and stopping anywhere they please to gawk at the beautiful colors of the foliage. :lol: Come on up sometime.

I wish I could afford to maintain two households so that I could move South for the winters. But year round living in South Texas didn't work for me. Half the year it was just too damn hot every day for me to enjoy the outdoors. My motorcycle sat unused for weeks or months at a time. Even in the evenings it was miserably hot, plus the air filled with bugs. But December through March was pretty nice in San Antonio. I find the length of time that I cannot ride my motorcycle here during winter is about the same amount of time I couldn't enjoy riding in the summer in Texas. The answer is to be a snowbird, but once I retired I really can't afford to keep up two homes.

But winter is not here yet, not by a long shot. Yesterday was in the low '60's and I was out for about an hour and a half on country roads enjoying the changing colors of the trees. I figure that I have at least another month of decent weather before the bike goes under a cover in the garage. Then its about four months before I can start enjoying the outdoors again. On the other hand, where I live now I can visit my kids and most of my grandkids pretty regularly, something I could not do if I moved to the South.

So for now I'll keep buying lottery tickets and maybe if I get lucky I can have the best of both worlds. Maybe is southern California were not so anti gun and such a political cess pool I could go there and enjoy the weather year round.

Stopped by the Guadalupe river in Seguin and New Braunfels yesterday at the public boat ramps and saw a few retrievals in process. I might put my 14' in next week at the NB ramp. The water level was up so they must have released it,somewhat,up-river. No significant rain has fallen since June.

Well, It's been a L-O-N-G time, but I don't recall all the hot humid weather up around Jacksonville, FL, but it's getting more and more crowded, Don't know about Pensacola, FL area, that's been an even longer time than Jacksonville.

Volvo's; HMMMM;; Saw a program on (damn the name of the Brit Car program escapes me now) where they were in Sweden and the Swedes were RACING Volvos, Saabs and other brands around on a dirt track through the woods.

I think you'll find 'em on YouTube with some searching: Swedes building "Super Stock" tractors! They're a hoot if you can find 'em!

BTW, whatever happened to SAAB? I once heard someone was trying to buy them and lift the car division from the ashes, then nothing. I think the aircraft division escaped GM's kiss of death...

Not hardly!

We had a goodly amount of rain for one day almost two weeks ago, plus a tiny bit of rain night before last, in a big summer thunderstorm kinda thing. But it's still dry as a bone around here right now.

In fact, I went to a "training class" last night put on by the water district on how to obtain and use reclaimed water for our home irrigation uses: it seems they're trying to avoid the billboards I saw mid-summer in the lower Central Valley that proclaimed, over a picture of a dead lawn, "Brown is the new green! Let it go!" Jerry's mandated a 36% reduction in our district's use of potable water, but we've already been "conserving" long enough and to such a degree that's not possible, and now there's talk of big fines from Sacramento for being out of compliance. So water districts around here are working to incorporate previously known but so far unused technologies as a workaround. I'm pretty sure you remember the Santee Lakes project in the early '60s? What's old is new again!

We'll see if we can get wet enough once again... maybe that rotten kid, El Niño, will help us out!

I know the situation in California is dire and I do hope you get rain and SNOW this winter, BUT the rain NOT in the usual fashion of So-Cal where it rains for 30 days in a row and then not for the rest of the year !!
I got a brother and nieces and nephews out there so I do watch and worry.

Many many years ago I lived and worked in Ft Lauderdale, FL. I have been there in summer and winter and can see no good reason to leave MD to go somewhere that has the same hot humid weather I was having all summer at home in MD. If I were a 'winter getaway' person I would go to Southern Arizona.
