Stuck in the Past with my P-89

I keep looking at the new crop of semi autos, but my stainless P-89 just never quits. I can't afford a whole battery of firearms so I am wondering if upgrading to the SR-9 is worth it or just spend less through Numrich and pick up some spares for the P-89 or find a good used complete P-89 or P-85. I know the P-89 is not real pretty and on the chunky side, but it is like the AK-47 in terms of reliability. I'm more of a rifle guy and keep a pistol around for back-up and self protection on the road. Here in Louisiana your car is an extension of your home and it is legal to keep a firearm in your car.

Love my P90. It'll be one of the last guns I sell. Accurate, reliable, built like a tank.

However, I never really need to have my arm twisted too hard to find a good excuse to buy a new gun.

If you want a new gun, I don't see it as an "upgrade" from your P89, just different.

Heck, throw a good 1911 and a Blackhawk in the mix and you have the start of a collection!... :D :D

Just bought a P-85 Mark II.

They had to sell it to me with no magazine ( California - it had a 15 round mag and that's a no-no.)

So I had to order one.

Think I'll get the Hogue wrap-around rubber grips for the P-85 too.

The teeny lil' pistols seem to be all the rage right now but we like 'em big and clunky. Feels like a real gun in your hand.

Hey, I hear ya!!!

I still enjoy my P-85. I bought it back in 1990, it was my first Ruger (but certainly not my last....lol).

Not to high jack but how do you like the adjust sight on the 85? Maybe start your own tread and post pics of the detail.

Thanks,

Oh and I like my custom 89 too. See avatar.

95 decock levers and trigger as well as custom uncle mike grips with ruger pin inlay. KP upper on P frame.

Buckeye,

Did the P95 decock levers fit on the P89 without any modification? If so, any bigger pictures? I was thinking of putting P97 levers on my P90. Looks like they are a lot more compact.

Thanks,

I had issues with it apparently never having been cleaned - lots of lead and copper fouling in the barrel. It was shooting all over the place. Then, because of being anxious about there something else being wrong with it, my technique was flawed - something I didn't realize until I had the wife shoot it.(I was muscling down on it and I was shooting way low.) So we are now getting respectable groups directly above the point of aim and are ready to fiddle with the sights.

I like my P89 a lot, was my first semiauto pistol (first handgun at all was GP100) and even though I prefer Glock 22 for carry now, P89 will stay with me forever and will accompany me on every range trip.

Hi Ken,
Buckeye is my level here not my handle but no worries. The decock levers fit the same between all the models. I have 95 levers on my 89. I have 97 levers on a 94. I have a nother set of 95 levers on my 944. Simply pop off and back on. I put the 89 levers back on the other 95. Switched the 94 levers back on the 97 etc etc. They all are the same.
I did have one pistol that the levers had to be pried off. the pin that fits into the groove was wide or the groove was skinny, how ever you want to look at it. So I just filed this very slightly to fit them easier.

Again sorry for the highjack.

You can search for me "roylt" and see some of my other mod threads.

Enjoy the P-guns!!

not a fan of the plastic guns so i really don't see an upside to a new model over what you have (just my opinion). i prefer a .45 over a 9mm so i haven't been tempted too much for a p89 since i love my p90 but i can't say one won't end up in my safe one day............

roylt.......love those grips!

I have a SR-9 but in some ways like the P-89 more;it seems to be more reliable and durable.
I believe time and round count will eventually show it is neither. It's time to put away the myth that polymer frame guns aren't as durable as metal. If nothing else, Glock should have demonstrated that to nearly everyone's satisfaction.

BTW, the P-series metal frame pistols have aluminum frames and there were a lot of shooters who were absolutely certain that "beer can" guns wouldn't hold up and that an all forged (not cast) steel gun was absolutely the only one worth owning.

Yep, exactly. I remember back in the '70s being told my S&W model 39 wouldn't hold up with it's alloy frame. Forty years later it's still going strong. Now I have a bunch of plastic pistols. Love 'em. I've fired a lot of rounds through my LCP, LC9 SR40c, and P345 with no visible wear or fault.

i've actually seen a polymer .45 that had to be sent back to the manufacture to have the frame replaced. that being said, no gun manufacturer ever wants to put out an unsafe gun and the 3rd gen glocks have had some changes to the frames to ensure saftey.

My advice would be to NEVER get rid of your P-89. It's reliable and will always be there when you need it. Try out other pistols but keep the P-89. You won't be sorry.

Just my 2 cents.

Dan

Why sell it if it works. Early p series pistols have a soul. Something a glock will never have ... I own two so I can say this. Great tools though, just not heirlooms.

This quote pretty much sums up my feelings too. I have 3 stainless decocker P89's and a stainless decocker P95.

They're not much to look at but all are rock solid and I didn't have to pay a lot for them.

I have a couple P95's and my P90 stainless and P94 (9mm) stainless go to the range nearly every time. A pair that have a lifetime lease in my safe, they ain't goin any where! Rock solid and 100% reliable 100% of the time. I love Ruger P guns, especially those made of metal.

Simple rule... if you have a gun you like and is reliable... keep it and better yet get another one just like it... and if at all possible another one... I did this with the P95 decocks and have no regrets...the one regret I have is the stainless steel P89 I have is not a decock model... I'd love to trade it for one.

Good point Blume. I practice that rule with Glocks, Ruger P series and Mini 14's. All proven guns with numerous mags to feed them. I keep spare parts around too for all of them.

I had five P95,s but have let that number slip a bit by gifting a couple and selling one. Maybe time to pick up another "just cause". Still the best pistol value out there IMHO.

The only statement I disagree with is that they are nothin to look at. I think the metal p series guns are beautiful. Finish is rough but the design is very pleasing to look at. I guess that is why total I have owned or do own 9 pseries guns. Currently I have 2 P90s, a P89, a P97 and a P345.

I agree, to me my P345 is a good looking pistol and has been 100% reliable. I know it's heresy but I sold a 1911 and replaced it with the Ruger. I much prefer the lack of the grip safety and the DA/SA action.

I lost a damaged p97 to a sr1911 courtesy of Ruger for only $79. Very nice gun.

I have a P97 which has worked flawlessly for me since I bought it about 12 years ago; looks pretty much like your P89. I can't imagine getting rid of this gun, regardless of what other guns I own or may own in the future.
