I have a 4 inch SS security six with a 151 prefix, best I can tell it is rare and ruger says it was shipped in 1974, I think I know what I have but dose anyone know the value, I'm not interested in parting with it, it is a lowback model

You'll not likely get anyone to guess on the value of your gun for many reasons but especially without a picture or any description of condition. Does it have the box and papers? Prices can vary greatly by region. I am a Security Six newbie and have found local ads for both a stainless snub nose Security Six and a 4" stainless low back Security Six. The snub is for trade only and the low back is $700 FTF cash ... quite a bit more than I paid for a blued high back I thought I paid too much for.

Tks very much, no box, no papers, it is in excellent condition and ruger reps told me they shipped it in 1974, it’s a tight great shooting gun

As noted above,, more info,, or "details" of a gun make a lot of difference in the values.
To assist you in real info,, that can help in determining the rarity of your gun would be to spend $10 & get the factory letter on it.
THEN,, once you get the details in that letter,, (Model nomenclature, & description) along with the serial number, then,, you can post info here to where those of us with a Red Eagle News Exchange Reference Guide, can look it up to determine exactly how rare it may or may not be.
The good folks at Ruger are NOT collectors or such & can be VERY wrong in describing rarity.
By the info you've provided,, you may have a scarcer variation,, it being a low back, yet a 151 prefixed gun.
In short,, get the letter, provide details,, and be very very detailed & honest on it's condition. Then an honest value can be determined.

Tks! I have found that there were only about 2300 of this variation produced when ruger changed from high back to low back ,it is in excellent condition, I’ve been a fan of S&W revolvers for many years, just happened to luck into this one , the serial # is 151-021xx
Oops, I think you meant to say when Ruger transitioned from the low back to the high back (Low Back was made from 1970 to 1974, High Back from 1974 to 1988)
Any low back with a 151- serial number is a rarity. I have both low back Security Sixes with a 151- s/n and high back Security Sixes with a 150- s/n. This happened during the 1974 transition period.

Thanks to all who have shared their experiences with these firearms, I think I have a real treasure here, traded even for a used S&W 642 air weight, sounds like I got the better end of the deal, I’ve been an avid owner and shooter of firearms since I was 17, 63 now and still pulling the triggerYes that's what I meant, what can I say, I'm oldtks!

Ya! Like most of us, I wish I still had all of the guns that I bought traded, sold or gave away, but those are stories best told over a bottle of wine, maybe two

I had a nib stainless low back 151 serial number Security Six 2-1/2" that I traded even for a Bisley 454 that only had 5 rounds fired. He's a collector while I am a shooter, so we were both happy. Plus he figured out that the 454 is not kind and cuddly and he doesn't like pain.
Thanks for the info, a friend at sportsman’s wharehouse verified that it is a low back model,
if it were mine, I would try to find an excellent period correct box for it.

What's the box say under the label?
Here is what I have been able to discern about the boxes (I use this in my displays at times) Feel free to correct me if I'm incorrect about anything.
I do have to add the white cardboard boxes that LCR's are/were shipped in, I just need to get the starting/ending dates as applicable
The boxes displayed are representative of those used by Ruger when shipping their Double Action revolvers.
White box 1970 to 1974
Red/White box 1974 to 1975
Red/Black box 1975 to 1979
Yellow/Black box 1979 to 1995
Gray (plastic) box 1995 to present
