I recently purchased a SRH that the previous owner hacked the barrel off at the frame. I have a smith facing and crowning. he says he can milll for a front sight, but wants to know what front sight I want to use that will work. Any ideas? I will post pics of the work in progress in the next few days! thanks.

I would use the same sight that was on the Super to begin with and also use the spring loaded pin to secure it. Your smith can do it easily because it's just a hole. That way, you can add to or trim the height of the blades without any work to the gun.

It's a belly gun now! The former owner made a 5 yard gun out of a 100+ yard gun. What would you need a front sight for?
I would probably offer scope mounts holding a small dot sight. It would have more useable range than the gun in any case.

Yeah True! It is a five yard gun now! The smith that I took it to asked me if i wanted him to mount a bead sight on the front! Funny!!! Thanks for the info. I think I will look for a factory front SRH sight and ask him if he can work with that! Or... I have a new security six front sight for the Penn. highway patrol models that was too tall and wide to fit my sec six. I could probably have him mill and drill for that! That would be sweeeet.

My favorite front sight is made by Weigand Combat.Blades can be interchanged easily without tools.Weigand sells blades but it also takes all the S+W DX blades and aftermarket.You can get partridge,gold bead,fiber optic,night sights-you name it.The blades come in and out by hand but remain solid when installed.
Installation is very simple for a gunsmith.A shallow groove is milled,1 3/4" long and one screw hole is drilled and tapped.Just an awesome sight.
The only thing I don't know is your height requirement.You would have to check that out.Blades come in at least 3 heights but I think there is only one ramp.Check out Weigand Combat's site.

Well, I finally got it back about 2 weeks ago. Recently figured out how to upload fotos. She still needs a little fine filing, but she shoots great. Helluva deal at about $325.00 Total- That's including the box elder burl grip inserts (thanks to Tim's Workshop in Orem, Utah). Included are 2 before photos, and 2 after fotos

It's definitely not a long range hunting gun, but in the hands of someone who can shoot and is willing to try, it's not a belly gun.

I couldn't find an Alaskan in .480, so I bought a new SRH with 7.5 inch barrel and made my own. No regrets, it shoots and carries SO much better as a shortie..... but it isn't a hunting gun any more.

I'm guessing that they were probably drunk, and that they didn't care what it looked like. Thet just wanted a concealable pistol. It is a shame, but I was able to get a great deal and a project out of it. Believe me, it's more than a 5 yard pistol, but... it's not a hundred yard shooter either.
I'd say it came out very serviceable. Coulda had a worse outcome very easily.
The first 2 fotos are before. The latter fotos are after work was done. I think the muzzle looks great, considering. The pistol surely is serviceable. I don't really want to put a longer barrel on it, as I have a 8 3/8" Smith model 29. I like the way this one looks, and it is a riot to shoot!!!

Some people shouldn't ever get above a RG when They do hack jobs like that. At least someone rescued the gun and tryed to straighten out that mess. I have a 454 alaskan and really like it it's unbelievable the accuracy it has at longer range. I also have a super redhawk 480 7.5" I have concidered having it cut back to alaskan size. But it won't look like that when finished.

Seeing that picture of you "pen holder" reminded me of the story in the news about the woman who cut of her husband's pen-is and threw it in the garbage disposal. Ouchhhhhh!
