I was using WWB, had 6 light strikes and 7-8 failures to feed the ammo. Quick question, and if it's dumb yall can just say yes or no.....I know the WWB can have failures to ignite the primer, may not be the pistol (Ruger 'fixed' it about 500 rounds ago) but would the WB ammo cause FTFeed? Funny thing, my first light strikes were after about 500 rounds- now 500 rounds later..?
Again this is my EDC and I want to know it'll SHOOT when I pull the trigger.

With my experience when using WWB it always fed fine and only had a couple of light strikes. If it's acting up (feed) again, often the place to start is the magazine or the extractor. Is it doing it on more then 1 mag? If so possibly an extractor issue...if so sorry to say it should go back. Not often they don't get it right when sent in for repair...but it can happen.

I like for my edc to eat whatever I feed it. I sold my 9c and 40c due to this problem. Couldn't trust them anymore. Sent them back to Ruger and sold them once they got back. Will prob buy another one day. It will strictly be a range toy though. I'm not bashing the gun at all. Plenty of people will say they never had a problem with theirs, or that Ruger fixed theirs. I'm just speaking from my own experience with the gun.

It happened with two magazines- both MecGars made for the 9c. I really like this pistol, and kinda don't mind sending it back, I have others I can carry. I just HATE not knowing without a doubt it will shoot when I want it to. Pistols have small moving parts that have to work in conjunction with each other, and mass-produced,,well, I understand. But it gets expensive trying to break in pistols- and when you have to do it 2-3 times.....I may end up doing the same as Rockimook- don't want to but..always had Ruger revolvers, smooth and reliable. But this semi is getting to be a pita.

Garbage in .... garbage out ....

Ever try any GOOD ammo ???

I hope you don't actually CARRY that cheap stuff in your gun.

It always makes me laugh when people spend multiple hundreds of dollars on a weapon, then feed it the absolute CHEAPEST ammo that they can find at Walmart, and then wonder why their gun has issues. If you're going to feed your gun the cheapest ammo possible ... you have to learn to live with failures. It's just that simple. The primers are inconsistent, the loadings are inconsistent, they change the components all the time .... and from batch to batch depending on what W can get the best deal on, etc etc. Sure ... most of the time it will go BANG ... but that's about all you can say about it.

Clean your gun, lube it properly, buy some good ammo, and your gun will most likely be fine.

That's the first place to start. Anything inconsistent with the ammo can cause ANY of the problems you're experiencing. Hard primers can cause what appears to be 'light strikes', low powered rounds can cause ejection AND feeding problems due to varying slide velocities. Your first step in troubleshooting any issue like this is CHANGING THE AMMO.

You refer to 'breaking in your gun' repeatedly .... very few plastic semis need much break in. I don't think you have a 'break-in' issue.

If you want a gun that will shoot ANYTHING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, under ANY CONDITIONS .... get a 1st thru 3rd gen Glock. :D I've owned 2, and in thousands upon thousands of varied rounds, mostly reloads .... have NEVER had a malfunction of ANY kind .... EVER. Do I like them ? Not particularly, but if I wanted a gun that HAD to function perfectly ... of all my guns I would pick a Glock.

Rev makes a pretty good point here. Although for the most part the gun should feed and fire pretty much any ammo, there are certainly some that are more sloppy then others when it comes to consistency. After I had issues with WWB I changed to Federal American Eagle and in over 1000 rounds ZERO failures.

A big part of a CCW weapon is confidence in it if you ever need it, you should have no apprehension to use if needed or it may be the edge you needed and lost. That said and for that reason I suggest using something known to be more trouble free for reduced anxiety and peace of mind. The AE I speak of is within $1.00 per box of WWB if not close to the same $$...not a huge difference and the SR9 loves it.

I just caught this. I am not familiar with that magazine, is there a good reason you changed mag brands? Personally... I wouldn't, the Ruger mags are very good and considered trouble free and good quality.

I'd shoot some with stock mags and see if the problem goes away...also if you send in your gun those mags will need to go with it and chances are Ruger will have issue with them IMO.

Just as an aside ... MecGar is a MAJOR manufacturer and they are the factory mag producers for many big-name guns ... Sig and CZ are two of which. Mags shouldn't really affect cycling or striking ... misfeeding maybe of course, but it's unlikely as the gun works fine for a few hundred rounds, then doesn't. Could be different ammo batches, and of course it could be the gun itself. Unlikely in my estimation.

First thing to do is change ammo and see what happens.

I'd buy some high quality ammo and keep it in your bag. When you start to experience malfunctions, run a few mags full of the good stuff through the gun and see if the malfs stop. If they do ... you pretty much have your answer. Change ONE THING AT A TIME.

You also have to realize that a semiauto handgun is a big-time mechanical thing, and WILL BE PRONE TO FAILURE ... especially with low quality ammo. Even Glocks ... and although I've never seen one fail (mine or anybody else's with ANY ammo) ... I'm sure they do.

I just shrug range failures off, practice my clearing drills, and keep shooting. Luckily ... my handloads rarely have issues.

I read that MecGar makes the Ruger magazines, that's why I bought them- if that's not right I'd sure like to know. As for cheap ammo or GARBAGE IN- we have a problem here Houston. I have two other pistols, both fire the WWB fine. In fact I shot the same number of rounds from the same box with my S&W the same day. Guess only the WWB with bad primers found their way to my 9c....
The only reason I even had the WB was they were gifts, I normally run Federal and Remingtons. I fired the Remington JHPs that I carry the same day, but I'm not sure if any of them failed to feed- I know they didn't fail to fire, cause I picked those up to see the strike-marks. I also looked at shells that had fired, and there is definitely a difference bewteen the indentations on the fired shells vs the ones that didn't.

I assumed you implied they were "aftermarket" mags. You may be correct they are factory, all I see on mine is "Made in Italy" which likely would be a Mec Gar mag I guess. I won't debate the WWB issue any further, I only can tell you my experience with this gun.

Verndog, I ahve two I bought that were advertised as "factory equipment" from Buds Gun Shop (these are the 17-rd) and of course the 17-rd that came with the pistol. I looked at them, the follower is the same color, they sure LOOK identical, the onoly diff is the baseplate says 'RUGER.' I may bewrong, but if so lots of others are, too..this is from the Ruger forum, and I ASSUME these guys know waht they're talking about- but I also know waht 'assume' means.

At this point given 2 new problems I'd say that it's beyond an ammo issue IMO. Too bad, and after going thru this once I personally wouldn't blame you for dumping the gun and going to plan B. Even Lexus can have an occasional lemon, possibly you are one of the unlucky few. :?

Well, I'll give it one more shot. Waiting for Ruger to send me a mailing label. Will talk to them this time, ask them what they did, if I can. Maybe they didn't polish the feed ramp or something last time, since last time it was only light strikes. When the rounds fired thru the S&W I kinda figured what you said- not really the ammo UNLESS the ammo could cause the feeding failure. Thanks for the help folks, we'll see what Ruger says in the next few weeks. If they aren't convincing I may be a 2-S&W owner soon.

Just because ammo fires successfully in one gun doesn't mean that it's not the ammo in a DIFFERENT GUN. Think about this. Many guns have different ammo sensitivities. Ammo that fires OK in a Glock may not cycle the action successfully in a Ruger ... or a CZ ... or whatever. Just because a given ammo fires OK in ONE GUN does NOT mean that that same ammo can't be a problem in ANOTHER GUN.

C'mon guys ... this is basic stuff. You need to change the ammo to see if things change ... it's the FIRST thing any gun repair person will tell you before you start looking at mags, and sending the gun back .... unless you just plain WANT to send the gun back. To be honest ... if I had the OP's issues with a gun .... it would be long gone before the 2nd trip back to Ruger .... and when it came back .... it SURELY would be gone. If you insist that you won't change the ammo because it works in a different gun ... send it back and hope for the best.

Regarding your third point above ... this is new information .... and you're not sure whether the different ammo (Rems and Feds) had any issues or not. Kinda tough to diagnose when you're not sure what happened.

Good luck !

I'm sure there wouldn't be any harm in trying some different ammunition. What you describe reminded me of a thread I saw on thehighroad the other day. I don't know if this will help you but the problem that person was having was actually due to the pistol (a SR40c) having the wrong extractor in it. Here is the link http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=624059

Hey rev, you in a bad mood or something? What is this "If you insist that you won't change the ammo.." Didn't you see I said it was a gift, I don't normally fire that stuff?
Verndog, I sure hope it's not a lemon- if it is I wouldn't even sell it, guess I'd have to keep it as a range gun or something. Guess I'll just wait & see what Ruger says.
MikeJ, I don't go to the highroad often, but do have it bookmarked. Yall ever go to the firearmsforum? Some pretty good stuff there, too.
Thanks guys- I'll keep you posted.

freedomcosts the link I provided wasn't to thehighroad index it was to the thread I was referring to-I thought some of the information in it might be helpful to you.

Guys, there are numerous complaints about WWB on other forums, too. The new Beretta Nano doesn't seem to like WWB either.

Yeh, I did go there- saw where you had referred someone to this forum...pretty cool we have so many people willing to help, isn't it.
I'm like Psalm144 though, if it IS an extractor problem- I'm not able to fix it, no patience for attention to detail, and arthritic fingers. Ya know it does lend credence to your idea, that it might be the extractor- That guy's worked sometimes, and turned out to be the wrong one. Anyway I'll let Ruger figure it out. Thanks again.
BTW, I sent Ruger an email Tuesday morning telling them about this, asked for a shipping label if they thought it appropriate- haven't heard a word. I know it's the holidays, and have seen here where repair times have increased, so I figure it'll be awhile before I see that 9c again-

I can understand why you would prefer to just send it in. Good Luck. Hopefully they will get it right.
