SR45 jams?

I just got back from a gun show extravaganza at a local range where manufactures bring out guns that you can shoot.

I shot an SR45 and found it to be very accurate and a most pleasant gun to shoot. But it jammed. The Ruger guy there said it was due to bad ammo (name brand from Europe) that they were forced to use because ammo is so hard to come by.

Has anyone else noted a lot of jams with an SR45?

Very possibly true, Euro ammo such as 9mm is loaded in very slightly different dimensions. The reloaders here could probably tell you more about that, I don't know the exact details.

The Steyr SA-1 I was about to buy is famous for only functioning well with euro ammo and has problems with some US ammo. But put the euro ammo in it and it works fine.

My SR45 has never had any kind of jam, but it has a lot of light strikes and slide is still almost imposable to rack with full magazine and usually will not cycle when fired with a full mag and a round in chamber, it also takes a really hard hit to latch a full mag. My SR9, 9c, 40 or 40c never had any of those problems and they run flawlessly on any brand or type of ammo.

not one! had it out again yesterday and put another 110 downrange, flawless. accuracy very good, recoil mild, this one has become my favorite.

Thanks for the feedback. I really liked the way it handled and shot, except for the jams.

The ammo was brass cased FMJ.

Nope! Mine has been flawless from shot #1. I shoot my own reloads exclusively to save $$$ and to be more accurate than factory fodder.

I love my SR 45...now...

I bought the first one to appear at my LGS in February. The S/N is in the low 4000's.
After a quick inspection and basic cleaning, I put about 50 rounds through it with several FTF jams. These were a mix of my reloads and factory 'ball' ammo.
I noticed that the firing pin would sometimes be exposed (sticking out) when the round was being loaded. This caused the case to catch as it rode up the bolt face and jam with the cartridge partially in the chamber. I also had a hard time loading the 10th round in the mags.

A call to Ruger support and had a shipping label in minutes. They had the gun about 10 days and it came back with repaired mags and some work in the striker area, per the cryptic notes. The next range session was much better but still couple FTF's.

What I finally did was to load both mags with 10 rounds and leave them sit for a couple weeks. They now load 10 with no issues and chamber the first round fine. I then loaded up 100 230 grain RN's with a slightly +P charge.

One more strip and clean, including the striker and channel. Banged off the 100 full power loads with no issues.

I have since shot 100's of lower power target loads and different bullet profiles with no problems.

My conclusions:

Ruger makes a great gun, but has the occasional miss, perhaps to the current high volume production.

Their product support is great.

Breaking in the mag springs by leaving them loaded and running some full power loads probably helps finish the gun's break in.

I love the way it shoots and my confidence is growing as it continues to be trouble free.

Ran 80 rounds of UMC FMJ downrange through my new SR45 last week.

No jams & the lead went where it was directed. Am pleased with that EXCEPT....
the slide never locked back when the magazine was emptied.

Talked to Ruger rep in Prescott today, will be sending my SR45 back tomorrow. Have had it 3 months and slide only locked back after last round about half the time, but now it never does. The tab that the mag follower pushes up to lock slide is broke off, also it has been having some light strikes, like 6 times out of 40 rounds fired last week and pistol along with striker channel was cleaned after each trip to range. Pistol has fired 355 rounds and same ammo run flawlessly in P97, P345 and SR1911 so i don't think it was an ammo issue.

have had the same issues as a few people with ftf.. same as connAK with american eagle and pmc ammo. have about 250 rounds thru gun but not have had time to get back out with different ammo. not thrilled with having to send a gun out .

Been on the other forum for a bit....but-returned my SR45 to Prescott around first week of June. Came back with a new extractor and was test-fired with 50 rounds "using the customer's magazines." It'll be a few weeks before I get to try it out. A consistent problem of leaving live rounds on the feed ramp after about 500 rounds. The problem extended beyond American Eagle ammo and a live round would stop on the feed ramp about 1-2 times per 2 magazines. While I was talking to Ruger customer service, they emailed me the UPS label to ship it. It was back in about 9 days. It came back range dirty and a list of every scratch on the gun-probably to avert damage claims. Sent with a Ruger yellow silicon cloth. Over 500 rounds and never had a failure to eject or any double feeds, so replacing the extractor is surprising...but I guess they know what they're doing. They repaired my LCP right a couple of years ago. Full report in early July. Hope to report good news.
