For those of you who own a SR1911, can you tell me how good the mags are that come with the gun. I recently purchased a SR1911 and have yet to shoot. I was on one of the other forums the other day and a guy was saying that the mags that come with the gun are for the most part very cheap and in time will damage the gun. He advised to purchase one of the better mags colt, chip mccormick or equilivant. I am new to the handguns and any help that any of you can give me, would be deeply appreciated.

The OEM mags are made by Checkmate, one of the better mag builders... In my opinion, better than McCormick or Wilson, in fact. They make mags for Colts, among others.
These Checkmate mags appear well made. Could this guy be talking about USGI tapered vs Hybrid vs Parallel Wadcutter feedlip designs, with an opinion that one design was good and the others not-so good? Some are very anal over preference of feed lip. Ruger specs their Checkmate mags with Hybrid feed lips. My take is vet the gun with the ammo desired. If the mags run well, then use them.

This guy probably heard this ridiculous statement elsewhere (internet, gun shop) and simply regurgitated it on that forum trying to pass himself off as "someone in the know".
That is one of the most retarded things I have heard recently.
Like stated above, the mags that come with the SR are made by the same company that Colt uses (so saying that Colt mags are better is perfectly ignorant). They are perfectly fine and will not "in time ruin the gun".

This was (If you are thinking about purchasing a 1911, these are things to consider). He was talking in general. I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that. The mags were one of the many items that he pointed out. When he mentioned the mags, It made me question if the ones that came with the ruger. I've had ruger guns before and they make good products. Just making sure. Like I say I'm green on handguns. Just making sure. Thanks all for the responses.

I'm pretty ignorant of 1911 magazines and all but the ones that came with my SR1911 seem to be very well made. I know others have made the statement that they are made by a good company. I don't know anything more than what they said except that they don't feel like cheap stuff and they work fantastically in mine.
To be fair, didn't one of the APG pistolsmiths of the year demonstrate and document damage to the feed ramp of alloy framed 1911s caused by one of the follower designs that would tip forward at the last round and gouge the ramp. I believe there is a patent on follower design to prevent the follower from tipping forward and making contact specific to alloy frame damage. However, none of this would apply to the Ruger/Checkmate mags used in SR1911s.

The Checkmate mags are excellent, and the the particular design that comes with the SR1911 is a really good one. I think you can get the same mag, w/o the Ruger name on it, from Top Gun Supply.

I did some research on this before ordering a bunch of new mags after buying the SR1911 over a year ago. The Wilson's cost more and everybody loves them, they have to be better. Maybe not.
The Checkmate and Ruger frame are matched in their design to reliably feed cartridges with projectiles of different shapes, ball, HP's, SWC's, etc., without the need of further tuning of the feed ramp, slide lock or mag release. Other mags will work but not with the same reliability without further tweaking. An exception would be the Wilson's which by design present the cartridge at a different angle avoiding the feed ramp issues that vary from the frame designs of different 1911 manufacture. These are favored by shooters that want a universal mag for several different 1911 frames they own. The Checkmate's are the same as those that came OEM with my Colt and I've also seen them on the Springfield's. I bought 6@ $20 ea, free ship from 44mag.com. Zero mag feed failures w/10,000+ through the Ruger and 3000+ in the Colt.

I have 6 factory Ruger mags and a couple gun show random used mags and the factory mags feel more substantial in the hands and like they'd last longer...
They all perform perfectly in my 1911s...

Any mag with a non captive follower can be an issue in an alloy framed 1911. the mags supplied with my SR 1911 are captive. I never gave this much thought until I acquired a Lightweight Government, so its not a bad idea to purchase only certain mags. :)DGW1949 said:

The mags that come with the SR1911 seem fine. I use them and a bunch of other 1911 mags from my "magpile" and they all work O.K.

I find the mags pretty durable and solid. Good tight fit. I prefer the 7 round clip for ease of carrying. Like the rest of the gun, very nice quality.

My experience. I cannot survive on 2 mags per gun. Even my doublestacks have at least 4 mags.
Of course there were no Ruger mags available on the rack or from Ruger, so I purchased what they had, a Pro-mag and a Triple K.
Hard to insert, would not eject when empty, had to remove manually, very tight in the magwell.
Returned to Cabella's, and at the next gun show purchased 3 used Colt 7 rounders for $25. No problems whatsoever. Insert fine, eject when empty.
Will try to add 1 or 2 10 rounders when I can.

Seriously... I have several SR1911s and the red sticker is the ONLY snag I've had with 'em. The mags are stout and smooth acting. Never had any feed problems of any sort.
Damned find guns all the way around IMO, including the mags!
