I've pondered this for a while, but Ruger needs to introduce their version of a M14/M1A. I was thinking it could even smaller than an M1A, but bigger than a Mini-14. Make it .308/7.62x51, semi-auto, detachable mag, and for less than $1500. AND, it would made in America, not Brazil. It would even be better if it was full size. At first sight, I thought the new scout rifle was a .308 Mini... I was actually disappointed. LOL

Forget the Ruger made 1911A1. There's enough people making those. We need another outlet for semi-auto M14s.

It seems to me that there isnt much for calibers or rifles that slot nicely between a Mini 14 and an M14.

I would like to see a Ruger semi-auto in a .308 class caliber (make mine a 7mm08 please) but I dont expect it to happen. Ruger is able to make the Mini 14/30 for a reasonable price because they have had the tooling and process in place for a Long time. A new gun design requires a lot of capital investment which means that is going to be an expensive gun unless they expect a huge volume.

I would expect that it would be cheaper to come out with a Ruger branded AR10, and in all honesty, as much as I like the Garand action, the AR platform has a lot to recommend it over a Garand. Easier to find suppliers to make forgings and other components. Lots of aftermarket accessories. Easy to mount a scope...I could go on. My only issue with AR10's is that they are heavy.

It does seem to me that there is a hole in Ruger's product line. No Semi-auto deer rifle to compete with the Remington 750, Browning BAR and others.

I, too, would love to see Ruger make a M14/M1A. If they could produce one at a reasonable price, I would jump on it.

as long as we are dreaming...I have the cash now..for a Ruger Mini-Garand...same format as the orginal Garand...just scaled down to the 223...using eight round enbloc clips...just gets my grin going

With the market GREATLY stronger with the AR design, I don't see any M14 derivative doing fantastic. Bring in the weight factor and that would kill it more. Everyone's seemingly having to have lightweight everything now. (so much for the big tough image they wanna portray with all the asscessories. ;)

I'd be willing to bet a dollar, heck make it 2, that if there was another outlet besides Springfield Amory, there would be a lot bigger demand for them. There are plenty of people that are into "tactical" rifles, and many would like a DMR rifle to fit in between their AR15 and their bolt action sniper rifle. I'd even love it if Remington came out with one if Ruger didn't.

Now that would be interesting. It wouldn't run into any "AW" worries and being radically different than anything having a detach mag probably wouldn'y cannibalize Mini sales or compete with the AR folks.

I doubt if you will ever see another Garand style rifle ever make it to the market. They just are not as accurate as the Stoner style semi autos and other various semi automatics. I like a Garand style action as good as anyone else but it's 1930's technology. I currently own 3 Mini 14's, 3 Garands and an M-1 carbine but, there are more accurate designs. kwg

The perceived demand for M14 type rifles is low because Springfields are expensive, poor quality (brazilian made), and have poor availability. Clearly Ruger would fix all of those problems, and deliver an excellent product.

I do not like AR10s (or AR15s for that matter), and I wouldn't buy one. Ruger does build the Mini in 6.8 SPC, which is capable of cleanly harvesting deer, and the Mini 30 with quality ammunition is also very capable of harvesting deer.

Sure, both of these rifles (Mini 30 and Mini 6.8) are fine for 100yd (give or take a few) shots on whitetails. Much past that and you are running out of steam. I'm not saying its not enough at 200yds, but I would rather have a .308 class cartridge.

If you are tying to justify a new rifle purchase, its helpful if that rifle makes a good all-around rifle as opposed to something that has the limitations of an intermediate cartridge like a 7.62x39 or 6.8 SPC.

If you had an adjustable gas system like you see on the SR556 you could load your .308 semi auto with reduced loads for blasting (think 3-gun competitions) and practice, and you could run full-power loads for hunting.

Just to be devil's advocate... the Mauser-style bolt action is 19th century technology, but is copied by everybody making bolt-action rifles today. The Browning 1911 design, in it's basics, is still around in many, many pistols today. It may be an old design, but there's something to be said if somebody copies it, or wants to copy it.

im not a big fan of minis. I have quite a few through the years and theyve all been sold or traded off. that been said if they came out with a 308 version id have to own one.

How long have they been making M1a's in Brazil? Is it just the receiver? I was aware that their 1911 frames were made in Brazil but did not know anything regarding the M1a.

As far as Rugers line of 6.8's--I think that I'll pass until they revise the chambers to a SPCII with a 1-11-11.25" twist. I want one but do not want to be limited in my ammo selection. They are missing the boat IMO.

I would rather have one quality M-14 type rifle than three ARs. I do not care for the AR platform. I just am not inclined to lay out $1500 or more for a rifle of this type. I bought one years ago for $550. Should have hung on to it.

And you know they are of poor quality because ....?

Not that we can get semi's in Aussie anymore, but whats wrong with the Remington R 25 and it weighs only 7.75 pounds msrp $1567. Proves just because it's a 308 doesn't mean it has to be heavy.
