I know ya'll would like a chance to spend someone else's money so here's you chance. I am going to order a new Blackhawk or Super by Monday. Here are the three choices I have narrowed it down to:
1. 45Convertible
2. 44 Special
3. 44mag
These are in no certain order. All would have 4.62 barrel and be blue finish. Which ever one wins out will be a companion to my Guidegun 45-70.
Please give a reason(s) on your choices. What say the masses??
Thanks, Joe

You don't say what you're going to use it for... I say the .45 to go with the 45-70 you are carrying.

That said, I really like 44 specials for the general use and plinking that I do. But for hunting type use I take one of my 44 mags.

Good luck, and enjoy whichever choice you make!

Talo 44spl. from acrylictnk. One hell of a good deal and one of the tightest guns I've ever owned, including custom guns. Balance and feel are great. I haven't had the time or pleasure to shoot it yet but the expectations are high. Plus these short barrelled stainless guns look good and are a limited run. I have Blackhawks and SBHs in the other calibers too and all are great guns so you just can't go wrong. If you don't reload, then you might want the SBH if you can find a short bbl in one. It's just according to your use and need. Remember - eventually you will want ALL of them anyway.

Do you reload? If not, the 44 Mag. If you do, both the 44 Spec and the 45 Colt really shine with good handloads.
My personal choice is the 45 convertible.

Of the choices you gave, I'd go with the .44 Spl because I'm not a hot-rodder and it's a smaller/handier/more balanced gun.
Way back when I was younger, I figured out perty-quick that the NM-45 and the SBH were just too big/bulky for my own uses. I tried especialy hard to like my NM.45 convertable...but just couldn't. The SBH was much worse in that respect but at least it shot well. In fact, the example I owned was more accurate than the '94 Marlin that I also owned at the time. In the end though, they both left. I never missed either.

You narrowed the field to 3 excellent choices...makes this a hard call to make for me. The fact that you reload makes it even harder. Only thing I would change is go to 5.5 inch barrels and stainless...I'm about 5 miles west of the Mississippi river and humidity is d*** near as high as the temperature....or higher...most of the time. Rust is not your friend.

The 44 special would carry nicely and get close to magnum if you needed loads at that level. The 44 magnum is my favorite for 40 years and I load a lot of mid range for the revolvers and MARLIN Cowboy rifles. There's an old model 45 Convertible in the safe, but I haven't done much with it yet. The 44 magnum and 45 are larger frame guns and h*** for stout, so I'd get one of them...probably both over time.

If the revolver is for utility rather than backup to the 45-70, I'd take a SS 44 Special. They handle really well, carry nicely, the flattop version is a bit more compact/lighter than the fullsize, and since you handload you can run it up to a 240 at nearly 1200fps, and mine have been nearly squirrel gun accurate. What more do you need?

If it is a backup, then the 45 Colt makes more sense with honkin' big Ruger only loads.

I asked yer Marlin 1895 and it said, "PLEASE get a Magnum Research BFR .45-70 Gov't fer companion!!!"

I'd have to vote 45 Colt with the acp cyl if able. I do agree with the shorter barrel for ease of carry, 4 5/8" or so. With your reloading you can go up & down the spectrum as needed.

+1.

The convertible is two guns in one. Simple choice IMHO.

The 45 convertible will run 6-7 ounces lighter than the other 2 due to the alloy grip frame/ejec housing.

With the 2 cylinders you have the capability to shoot "Ruger only" Tyrranosaur stompers all the way down to mild target 45 acps.

Easier packing and using 2 of the most popular cartridges of all time would make it a no brainer twere it me.

Well, I happen to own at least a few of each of your revolvers of choice.
That said, I happen to spend more time with my 45 convertables than any of the others.
THe 44 spl is truly a great gun, and I do enjoy both of mine. However, the load range for that caliber is limited when compared to the other two.
Next, the 44 mag is one fine caliber, and yes, you can use 44 spls in it. Making it versitile as well. The grip frame and power levels of the 44 mag tend to make some folks shy away.
The 45 colt, and ACP convertable. It really comes into it's own in the 4-5/8" bbl. Easy handling and packing. Recoil is comfortable to most folks even with hotter loads. Having a dedicated cylinder for the shorter ACP caliber keeps you from developing a cylinder ring inside when you want to switch back & forth calibers. (The 44 mag vs 44 Spl back to 44 mag.)
Lastly, resale values of 45 convertable tend to hold better than 44 mags.

I'm a .44 (Sp and Mag) guy, but will have to side with the .45LC/.45ACP Convertible folks--in a 4.62--on this one if intending on packing/sidearm companero on your .45-70 hunts. Otherwise, I love the new .44 Specials in all their forms. Mine are New Vaqueros in 3.75 and 4.62 but one of the flattops is calling me as well.
Good luck. I agree - good choices to choose from!

The .45 is my choice. Have the 45 Blackhawk and Guide Gun loaded in the truck for todays trip to the desert. I just prefer 45s over anything else, cheap to reload with lead, slow and accurate. Originally got the convertible but ended up selling the acp cylinder on the forum as it served no useful purpose for what I use the gun for. I had a 4 5/8 NM Super but never really enjoyed shooting it. Yup, .45 without a doubt.
