Speed Six front sight

I would like to replace the stock front sight on my 2 3/4 inch Speed 6 with a fiber optic, orange insert or tritium etc. Anyone have experience with this, good or bad?

Naw...I got some of those eyes too :roll:
I ordered an orange insert front blade from Numrich - it was looked too tall when it got here so I haven't tried installing it yet.

In the mean time, while I was waiting for the new blade, I painted the front ramp flat white & its much easier to pick up than the HiViz (red) sight on my S&W M63 or the Trijicon night sights I just replaced on my M3914.
$1.49 for a bottle of Testors instead of ~$45 for a HiViz

Since that model has been out of production for some time,, these neat new fangled fiber optics aren't readily available.

If the planets and stars align correctly I'll be picking my Service Six up at the fun store tomorrow. I am concerned about the sights having the correct elevation for my handloads. The front sight on this gun is replaceable, right? I'm planning to get an extra blade for it and experiment if need be. Does it use the same blade as the SP-101 and/or fixed sight GP-100?

I ordered a Millett Speed 6 front sight, with orange insert, from Jack First today. I double checked to make certain that it was for a Speed 6 and not a Security 6. I'll advise upon delivery.

Got a NOS Millett orange front sight blade from Jack First for my Speed 6. Have not yet arranged for installation. It seems to be a bit shorter in length than the original Ruger blade. Anyone have pics of one of these on their Speed 6? Also, a careful, reliable gunsmith near Cleveland, OH? Thanks.

I have tried fixed sight GP100 blades for a Security Six, and an SP101 blade for a GP100 and all of them fit, I just haven't gotten the chance to drill them yet. The SP101 blade has the hole in a different spot than a Six or GP though.

If I had to choose, I would rather the gun hit high than low, the light .357's tend to hit the lowest since they are out of the bore faster. I can deal with 158 .38's hitting a few inches high, doesn't bother me too much.

Which SP101 sight did you get? The .38/.357? If I recall this one is about .155" tall. The .22 and .32's I think are a bit taller especially the .22LR due to the semiadjustable rear sight. How tall are the GP-100 ones?

I don't have a reliable way to measure it, I bought a pre-drilled Gemini SP101 front sight listed as "for .357 SP's only" and installed it in my GP100 4" and it hit pretty much dead on with 125 gr. .38 +P's. I just didn't like how it fit in the sight channel, I'll try to get a pic on here in a few minutes of how it sits in there, it works and the pin goes through but it doesn't look good.

Gemini sells GP100 fiber optic and gold bead front sights but doesn't offer pre-drilling like they do for the SP101 sights.

I am hesitant to try drilling a sight blade because I feel that I will ruin it :roll:

set the 'new' blade "in place" slowly drill from BOTH sides, a little at a time, so the holes "line up" (meet in the middle) most folks tend to drill off to the side if going in from ONLY one side, nature of a drill bit that small in diameter......it'll 'walk"..................or use the proper sized drill bit, mark the sight blade, again, from BOTH sides and drill it ( the blade ONLY) in a drill press....couple of options there....if I recall those Speed Sixes, and Service Sixes do NOT have a very tall sight anyway??? no reason for any company to be making/marketing, stuff , for an "obsolete" item............................I'd bet , the gun would end up shooting low then......most we've come across that had 'redone' front blades' do.....
Paint the back of the front blade with DayGlo orange or such if you have trouble "seeing" it...... :wink:

I had thought of getting a hex bit 1/16" drill bit and just trying to do it by hand with my hex-bit screwdriver. The sights are an aluminum alloy and should be easy to do by hand. The last time I tried to work on a gun with anything powered it didn't go well.

The next time I pass by the Grizzly industrial tools store, I will stop in and get one of those bits. For like $3 for the bit it's worth a shot.

Here's a pic of the Gemini SP101 front sight as it fit in my GP100. Not only is it backwards but it's canted. The sight looks great, when I eventually get an SP101 this sight is going on it.

the 'flat' on that type of sight, is supposed to face the rear (the shooter) and keeps light from reflecting towards ones eyes.......if canted, then one has to fit/file ( adjust) so the sight blade goes staight "up & down"...often have to "compensate" for a 'slot' cut or milled crooked...............ands yes, you will "see" when someone has taken a rubber/plastic mallet and "adjusted" with a GOOD wack..........one way or the other...... :roll:

Left to right, it's straight. But it's canted backwards.

Someday I'll get a sight fitted in there.......

One of the reasons your sight may not be fitting correctly is that it is installed backwards. The radius goes to the front and the flat part to the rear. The radius is to help prevent snagging in a holster or other object and the flat part is supposed to help reduce light reflection. You might try taking it off and see how it fits the other way.

Any of the SP101 fiber optic sights will fit in the Speed Six front sight blade cutout, it will just need to be drilled.

Any gunsmith worthy of the title should be able to drill and install a front sight blade on the Speed Six with ease.
