Long story short, I painted my house and saved $1200. There is a 3" SP101 down at the candy store. The shortest barrel I have ever shot is 5" and usually shoot 6 1/2 or 7" mostly .22. Will I like the 3 inch? It's going to be a home defense gun. Last night on TV there was a home invasion, my wife got a little concerned...one thing lead to another and I'm out gun shopping today. A little extra savings didn't hurt either. It took a lot of effort to step back from the gun counter, but I just had to think about it of course...

But how do 3" barrels shoot? Do you even notice, aside from sight radius? The sights are drift adjustable rear, with a white outline, pretty nice actually; easy to see with the white outline.

From all I've herd, they are far superior to the 2 1/4 barrel. You should consider the gp100 if you are not going to be using it for ccw. You get an extra round and its a little more comfortable in the hand.

Yea, I thought about the gp100. I've already got the 6" version though. I think I'm looking for something different. The thing I like about the SP101 is it's a .327 Fed Mag which means 6 shots.

Earlier this year I bought the .327 Blackhawk. And I don't reaload for this round yet, but each gun store I went to today had more than enough American Eagle factory ammo.

If you already have a 6" 357 I'd get the 3" SP101. I think you will like it, should be a hair under $500.

i really disliked shooting my 2 1/4 but really like my 3" and its far more accurate.

i will always suggest a 12ga for home deffense though.

Sold my 2 1/4" the minute I fired my buddies 3". Far superior IMO.

You know the last time I went shooting. Just for the fun of it, I got my 6" GP100 at the 100 yard range, with a red dot, I could hit the steel plate about half the time. I was more than impressed.

Follow up Question:
What about the accuracy of this SP101? I know it isn't a 25 yard target revolver. Can I expect to keep the group in the black at say 10 yards?

Here is the GP100; I will have to get some American Holly inserts for the SP101 now.

Yes. I haven't punched any paper yet with my 2 1/4, but I did hit a torso sized (my skinny torso sized, in fact) chunk of wood I had left from chopping firewood this winter, everytime. That was with .38 spl non+p from about 5 to 10 yards. I worked my way back because those .38s shot very low.

i can hit a 4" steel spinner most of the time with my 3" at 25yrds. i kill papper plates and apples all the time at 20yrds. the chest is much bigger than that and i dont think i have a place in my house longer than 20yrds

We own one of each bbl length around here. I enjoy shooting both,, and I can see good reasons for each one. The shorter bbl is easier to CCW and the 3" bbl shoots a bit better IN GENERAL.

Guess I'm gonna be the dissenter here. I don't see a good reason for the 3". If you're toting one that long, get a gp in 3" and have one more round. If you're wanting to carry concealed, get a 2 1/4". It has more concealment options.
As far a accuracy, that's the shooter not the barrel length. I practice with my 2 1/4" sp from up close and personal out to 50 yards. It does just fine. I might also add, if you are going to carry it - practice with it. If you're not willing to practice with it, leave at home.

Own and love a 2 1/4" SP101.


My SP101 wears CRIMSON TRACE LASER GRIPS, and REALLY EXTENDS THE REACH, ........BUT.....again....BUT>>>>>>>>>>>

Ive used it on the 25 yard range with open sites with those "MAN SIZED and SHAPED TARGETS!"
I would trust my SP101 out to 30 yards with open sites!

I would have total faith in the SP101 for yer situation, yer question after buying it for home defense should be...What power level round should I have in it?

BTW, if yer wife might need to protect herself while yer not there....
Seriously consider something like a 9mm.....again, JMHO.

That's all I have are the 3"ers and all I would buy. Great all around little gun and easy to carry. More controllable.

If your first concern is a house gun for self defense and home protection, then I'm also of the same opinion to suggest an 18" barreled 12 ga shotgun as a first line of defense.

Something else to look at may be the KP345 semi-auto 45cal. You already have the GP100...if you're looking to also carry the SP-101, then the 2-1/4" barrel may be more suitable.

I'm going back to the gun store next week. I just have a little more painting...I'll post a picture then.

Thanks for all the comments. I do know it's got to be a Ruger. The store was filled with ever so many Taurus this and that. The SP101 just felt better and more solid.

I believe you'll have no difficulty staying in the black at 10 yards.

I don't have a 3" SP-101 in .327. I do have and shoot a 2-1/4" SP-101 in .357 Magnum, and do keep them all in the black at 10 yards. Both .38 Spl +P and .357 Magnum.

I do have Trausch grips on mine.
