SP101 CYLINDER LATCH OBOMINATION

It costs less. The original cylinder retention system is a boss that I believe may have been machined separately and pressed in. That was followed by a integral boss that was nicely contoured around 2010, which was switched to what you have now in the 2016-17 time frame. Fewer cuts=less production time=more dollhairs.

The 4 inch I bought new in March 2017 and the 3 inch I bought new in 1989.Both look about the same to me

Your newer one has the contoured integral boss, the older one has the circular boss that was part of the original SP design.

I bought a 9mm SP101 from an online store a couple years ago. It looks terrible, like a chimpanzee finished the investment castings with a belt sander. And it has the same ugly “el cheapo” cylinder latch set-up as the OP’s. If I wanted a crudely finished handgun I’d buy a Hi Point. Ruger needs to up their effort to command the prices they charge. They can do better. They just choose not to. JMHO.

I hadn't noticed the difference either. I wish I'd noticed the difference in the cut of the scallops on the cylinder before I bought my latest SP 101. That slight curve in towards the face of the cylinder looks odd as heck to me.

I have that exact same 101 on the bottom but with hogue grips. Very powerful and easy to pack .357 magThe 4 inch I bought new in March 2017 and the 3 inch I bought new in 1989.Both look about the same to me
