Something new- rear sight canted

I've had my .44 SBH for about 2 years. Got it NIB and ever since it has been giving me fits. I have the sights adjusted all the way to the right and maxed out the the bottom. :evil:

I got to messin with it and squared both the windage and elivation up to the middle. What do you know the damn rear sight is the leaning sight of Pisa and the front sight looks good. Also note that the pin that holds the rear sight to the frame has always been sticking out, I have attempted to hammer it home the rest of the way but it didnt budge.

Would this be something to send it back to ruger for or should I just buy a new rear sight and hope that is the fix? Or could it have something to do with the rear sight pin-
Any advice on how to get that pin all the way in without messing up the blueing with nasty scratches like I did on my single six :(

Any help is very appreciated guys, I just want to shoot and enjoy this thing a ton and not have to worry about things so much

The rear sight comes off the gun very easy. Completely loosen the elevation screw and apply a little downward pressure on the sight and drive the sight pin out. It should come out easy with just a few taps from a small hammer on a toothpick at first and then a thin piece of wire. Let the pressure off the sight gently because there are two small springs under there. Find out why it is canted, is it the sight or the pin or what? Sounds like the pin doesn't go all the way through and might be buckled. To replace the sight and to get those springs in, a dab of oil will work to hold them in place for the assembly. :D

Thought I'd mention have similar problem, but on further examination, it is the rear sight blade and not the sight that is canted (in my case to the left). At first thought I thought it was the front sight blade (canted to right).

On examining the rear sight it is the blade in its recess that is canted. I'm going to take it off and play with it to see what the internal issue is, but ordering a Rough Country sight anyway, as that will get mounted in its place.

When tapping those little pins close to that bluing and not wanting to screw it up. . . . .

Use a brass punch, 1/16th for the sight pin.
Don't want to spend the $$ for a brass punch, then spend a little $$ and buy some brass rod, My hobby store and hardware store both have 1' lengths and only a buck or two. nip it to 2-3", file the end flat,,, "poor mans punch".

If it slips the brass wont go a tearing into the blue. Lot's of little taps better than big o'l slappers. :wink:

Thanks for the help guys- just an update I removed the rear sight assembly and inspected it closely. I layd it on a table at all different angles and if I put in on the table like a sideways T you can see its bent out of shape. Everyone is out of stock right now and the Rough Country is lookin good but $$$ :( so Im gonna make a call today into Ruger. Think they'll help me out? (edit) I want to get this bad boy back on track before September bear season!!! Could I heat it up and bend it back into shape?

At the very least they should sell you one.
The rear sight assembly should be model # MR15900 from the inst. manual. :D

So I spoke to a nice man on the phone, but he could not help me dew to the fact they have no rear sight assembly's in stock :( He also tried to get me to send my gun in for repairs - no thanks. Sooo I ordered a rough country from brownells

A much better sight anyway. That's a good deal in my book. :D :D

Well at least it was just the sight and not the slot in the top of the frame. It coulda been worse.... 8)

well well got my rough country site today and installed that bad boy. Now guess what- it appears you may have jinxed me RedHawk44!!! damn im so mad all of this work and $ to try and remedy this nagging issue and it smacks me right back in the face. I dont know if the roll pin hole is drilled at different places on the sides or what but the sight still appears to be tilted so it has to be something to do with the frame. What the heck do i do now guys???

So the rear sight roll pin holes are drilled at different spots on the frame :( my girlfriend just noticed this, I feel like a fool for spending the money before noticing this. sigh is there any way to fix this or would ruger fix this? or am i just gonna have to live with it

Put the original back on & call Ruger for a pick up box .

Thats pretty much where im at GP100man but kinda hesitant because I dont want them to mess it up worse than it already is. Will they really be able to make this good? also will they fit a new taller front site on there or is it "in spec" to shoot 6 inches high at 25 yards? took it to the range yesterday and it shot 6 inches high and a lil left with the rear sight maxed out to the bottom.

Sounds like you don't have much to lose in letting Ruger try to fix it...
