Seriously, adding accessories can get expensive & over the top quickly. When I decided to keep an AR-15 I won, I did only a few mods to make it more user friendly to me.

Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, the S&W figured to be the most practical choice. Don't see how I could go wrong, either way.
I've been able to resist the AR bug for all these years; now, I can only hope to control it. A decent three power+ scope and maybe a sling, a few assorted mags and I should be good to go.

Wolfie, welcome to the world of ARs. I have 3 and have been shooting/owning the platform for 35 years. I also have a mini 14 and I think you will enjoy the reliability and accuracy of the AR much better. I only have optics on my M4 and that is why I am posting. IMO you should go with a ACOG style optic. They are priced mid level to very expensive. Mine cost about $1300 but it is a awesome piece of hardware. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1583154311/trijicon-acog-ta31-rmr-bac-rifle-scope-4x-32mm-dual-illuminated-with-325-moa-rmr-red-dot-sight-and-ta51-flattop-mount-matte?cm_vc=ProductFinding. It is this one (which, wow they have gone up) but with a red chevron reticle. The ability to switch from medium range to CQB is very handy and fun, one minute you are punching holes at 200 yds. and then pull down on a target at 50 ft. and use the red dot on top. Target acquisition with either is very fast.
Anyway have fun with what ever you get, it is a great platform and fairly reasonable to plink with.

Wolfie,,, I owned a few over the years,,, but never really felt "attached" to any. I burned up a few M-16's in the Army,,, and while it's a fine firearm,,, I wasn't into the whole "tacticool" attitude. I would find one occasionally at a good price,,, buy it, never really use it,, and sell it. Well, after Newtown, and the attitude of our talking heads in DC,,, I decided that if I got another one,,, I'd keep it just to pizz them off. Well, a few months after Newtown, I won a Stag Arms AR-15. I decided to keep it & make it more user friendly to me for my purposes.
I added things that have a practical application. As such,,, mine didn't cost me a whole lot & it is perfect for the rare occasion I may need such a firearm.
I find a low power scope and or a red dot is a nice addition to them.

Love my 303 Enfield Mark 4's. Aint interested in any "AR"; But would take a good surplus M-14; maybe a M-1 Carbine.

Pamela, I'll be bringing a suppressed, short barreled AR (SIG 516) to the gathering for people to try out. I'm also probably bringing my M1 Carbine that you can shoot and see how you like it. I'll bring my SR556 down to sight in the Red Dot I put on it.
