My wife has decided to get her Georgia Weapons License. We had talked about it many times in the past but she had never followed up on it. She actually has it now but she has shot very little so we wanted to work on her proficiency before she started carrying. We went over to her sisters & shot today. Her sisters boyfriend decided to hang around as he recently purchased a FNS-9. We had a fun day.

When my wife & I met she already had a little Taurus model 85 with a 2" barrel she had been given but she had never shot it. I did persuade her to go to the range with me once or twice but between birthing babies & trying to keep them taken care of it has been hard to get her to go back. Now she is interested. She commented today that she didn't like the recoil of the little Taurus. I let her try my old Dan Wesson .357 with a 4" barrel loaded with .38's & she has now laid claim to it. I also let her shoot a little Taurus 9mm I purchased recently but did not think to tell her to keep her thumb away from the slide & she got a pretty nasty cut on her thumb. She hung out & shot with us for a while but wasn't interested in any of the autos after the slide bite & wanted to go visit with her sister some before we left.

The sister-in-laws boyfriend had recently bought a FNS-9. I let him shoot the .357, my SR-1911, XD-40, Taurus PT-111 Millennium G2, & my wifes little Taurus model 85. I in turn got to put some rounds through his FNS-9. We wandered around the yard looking at where he had been cleaning out the fence & where I have begun clearing an overgrown road back out so we can get to the back side of the property (I need to get it cleaned back out before deer season & want to set up a range back there also.

All in all a good day. I'm going to try to get back out with the wife soon. I may try to find a class for her near here as I think someone else could probably teach her better than I can.

Sounds like you had a great day. Mine was spent doing home chores.
I would STRONGLY suggest your wife find a good NRA Women On Target clinic. Make it a "ladies only" clinic & she'll have a blast.
If you can't find one in your area,,,, we can schedule a bit of training with Miss Penny if y'all come up to my gathering in October.

That sounds like a lot of fun Contender. I'm just not real sure what we would do with the kids.

There is an outfit called "A girl and a gun" that is focused directly at women. It gets pretty good marks around here. I have a daughter that works in Seattle and she has found a chapter up there.

Mike,,,,, The Gathering is a fun time,,, NOT a full time clinic or schooling thing. You can bring the kids. A LOT of socializing goes on. I'm sure the kids could be supervised while Mom took some time for lessons. You could watch them,,, let her get some good training,,, then she can take them while you get to play. Plus,,, y'all don't have to stay at the range all day. There are other things to be enjoyed around here.

You know it's going to be hard to replace that Dan Wesson?

I thought about that. I have been buying a gun a year the past few years with the exception of this year when I bought 2 inexpensive ones. I have been wanting a 6" barrel & shroud for the Dan Wesson. I may just have to shop for a .357 with a 6" barrel next year or see if I can buy her something else she likes & trade her. Of course I would still need to find a 6" barrel & shroud if I do that. I told her that it is the most accurate handgun I own.

I will talk to her about it & see if she goes for it. I did find a Women On Target Clinic near here. I had looked the last time this came up & you suggested it but there weren't any in our area. There is an indoor range that has been built since then near here. They do the classes once a month. I told her I would keep the kids & let her go. I just hope whoever is running it is as good as Miss Penny.

The 38 spl. are the problem don't let her shoot those, load up some good extra hot 357 mags. that give some good recoil she just might give the gun back.

Or wait till she grips wrong and gets a finger along side of the cylinder while firing and gets a good burn that can be worse then slide bit.

try these guys for less expensive versions.
also, CZ Arms now has DW parts & service available.

It has been a while Merle but I signed up on EWK's site to get an E-mail when they had a run of barrels & shrouds available. I never got anything back. I don't know if they aren't as available now or I messed up when I put my info in.

I really like that old revolver. I bought it from a pawnshop back in '95 for $100.

Your not down a gun, but up a reason to get another.;)
Plus your wife's happy. Can't go wrong there.

YEP !!!!!

I'm going to try to keep working with her as much as she wants me to. After she gets more comfortable with what she is doing I think we need to make the rounds & let her pick out her own gun. I'm kinda thinking she might want a GP-100 with a 3" barrel but time will tell.

I feel your pain! I made the mistake of letting my wife shoot my 2-1/4" Lipsey's SP101 with .38s, and she laid claim to it.

I tried to talk her into my 4" GP100, but the grip was too big. I did pick up a compact Lett grip awhile back, but we haven't been shooting much lately. I guess it's time to remedy that, eh? Wish me luck!

If all else fails, I'm pretty sure that if I pick up a regular stainless SP101 I can probably work out a trade, if I smooth the trigger out on it a little bit. After all, stainless guns are pretty.

I had a Dan Wesson 15-2 6" a long time ago, that was a tack drivin thing. Stupid me sold it .
Lou

I understand. There is more than one gun that I wish I hadn't sold. That Dan Wesson is accurate. I don't have a lot of revolver experience though. I guess one day I need to get some more so I have something to compare it to.
