Found about a 3' shed out in the garden this morning. A couple days old from the looks of it. Likely a copperhead. It'll be around till cold weather late this year, unless I get lucky enough to whack it. Probably others around also. This is why I carry my LCR .22mag w/rat shot whenever I leave the house. Living in the woods in MS is always interesting. :wink:
 
I've picked up several garter snakes already. I don't bother them other than to move them out of my way. Most likely a real dust-up was averted when a 14 incher slithered out of a bundle of T-posts last week while Tom was shuffling bundles from pickup to wagon. Pretty sure he'd have made some exciting moves had he seen it up close.
 
There is a blacksnake in my yard, he has been there since I moved in 4 years ago. I leave him alone, because blacksnakes are our friends. All other varieties are subject to inspection, and summary execution!
 
I've already caught a few. In fact, I caught one of the biggest black snakes I've ever caught about 2 weeks ago.
 
Caught a 12" northern brown snake for my neighbor the other day. She wanted me to kill it, I released it near the power lines instead. I told her it was barely bigger than a worm. She wanted to know if it would return, so I told her I released it with explicit instructions never to return to her yard. I had previously removed a 4 - 5 foot black racer from her garage; he was NOT happy about being caught!
 
I try to take care of my reptile neighbors.....but rattlesnake is quite tasty. :wink:
 
There's a group that I am part of that go out and explore the Southern California desert areas (old mines, ghost towns, petroglyphs, etc.) and the people that are posting pictures of their trips are, with almost no exceptions, posting pictures of rattlers they're seeing on their trips. I've been seeing so many posts with snakes I went out and bought some new snake boots the other day.

Boil the rib sections in shrimp boil, peel the meat off the bones and chop up and make a pot of tasty clam chowder out of them and jewelry out of the rib sections

They also make pretty good tacos with some lime juice, cilantro and Cholua hot sauce after the shrimp boil, serve with jicama and apple shredded

I don't really like them fried, but boiling them up, then beer batter, they are chewy like Calamari

I have a recipe for tanning rattlesnakes with glycerine, makes them look pretty good and hold their scales good.

I traded a pretty big tanned Arkansas blacktail timber rattler hide with 13 rattles to an old school Hell's Angel for a vintage Fender guitar amp back in 1973. That amp is worth about $3000 now. Decent trade

I just found out, Colorado has a June 15 to Sept 1st season and bag limits on prairie rattlers, but do not appear to have regs on western diamondbacks

I was making my second cutting of the year a couple weeks ago and flushed out a Black snake, probably 3 feet or better. A few years ago I had big 3.5 -4 footer living in a remote part of my yard near the treeline. I would always watch for him but hit him after he had strayed several yards into the yard. Felt bad about it so I was glad to see another smaller one near the same area again. I'll keep a better look out now.
 
I caught a nice 3 1/2' blacksnake this afternoon. It was a little chilly and moving pretty slow so I picked it up and moved it out of the tractor path.
 
We've got one or two at our house... I think one lives under it and the other in the attic... these are rat snakes, one I got identified by Contender.. the latest little bugger was under a box I moved in my storage area... no problem with them... but the copperheads I dispense with. Often when working in the wooded area of our property I strap on my S&W model 19... first two rounds are snake shot but the next 4 are 158gr hydroshocks... I'm just as worried about the two legged snakes that might show up as the others.
 
I haven't seen any around the house this year. Although I did see a ring neck snake a couple of weeks ago over at my sister-in-laws when I walked from the yard into the path that goes through the woods to the river.

A couple of years ago I got on an overtime job. We worked 6 to 7 days a week 10 to 12 hours a day for 8 weeks renovating an old school during the summer. I got behind on my yard work because of the hours I was putting in. When things calmed down & I cleaned the yard up I killed 4 copperheads. I have made it a point not to let things get that grown up again.
 
Had a diamond back crawl under my truck while I was in the oil fields two weeks ago. Almost didn't look as I thought they would still be waiting for warmer weather. I was there again today and I made darned sure I looked.

See it's comments like this that get folks like me (alright I was only 19 at the time so not very smart) to try and eat a rattlesnake. It does not taste like chicken, it tastes like rattlesnake and it's terrible.
 
Rattle snakes are very good eating. Most folk just describe them as tasting like chicken, well the don't, they are close in texture to chicken and chicken "like". I like mine fried with eggs when I can get them.
Never pass up a wild meal!

I consistently have to herd 3 or 4 out of the way when I'm mowing,usually eastern hognose,but sometimes brown garter snakes and a blue racer from time to time.
Now that we are living in the delta farm land,the more snakes the better,with the rodents around here.

A wise man! ;) The two legged variety can be a lot more dangerous than the slithery type...
 
I used to have a family of black snakes in my back garden area but haven't seen but one in the last couple years. As was said earlier, I too used to have to herd them out of the way when cutting the back lawn. No longer happening. I also found out the hard way that a black snake can REALLY bite down on you. Guess he didn't realize I was simply trying to move him off the road before some 'hero' came along and mashed him.
 
Some of the best eating I've done was a few years back and a guy cooked up some rattler.... the secret I think is breading it and deep frying.... so, I'm pretty sure it was the spices in the breading that made it so good.

Long time ago I tried cooking one I had shot and it did not turn out so good.
 
Eastern hognose is my favorite snake. It puts on the best show when threatened. They are totally harmless and I know a lot of folks that have made pets of young ones. My understanding is that the western hognose is slightly venomous. Hard to keep as they feed only on little frogs.
Still, the bluff display, fake strikes and the funny as all get out, rolling over and playing dead (they will roll back over even if you turn them over)..... got to love em.
Raising up like a cobra and spreading their neck and hissing is funny, how did they get that instinct?
If you get the chance to encounter an eastern hognose push it a little and watch the show!
BTW, don't kill them, their harmless.

Back in 67 then wife and I went to a rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Tx. Tried fried rattlesnake. Ever put anything in your mouth that the more you chewed the bigger and dryer it got. To keep alive I would eat it again but until then I will pass on snake.
