Snake in the grass

Happened to spot the king snake that has been hanging around here for a month or so. A small bird was playing chicken with him, but I wasn't able to get back outside before the bird was gone and the snake had moved a few yards. He's about 3' long.

I wish I had a nice Black racer Coachwhip or kingsnake that size like that eating copperheads here
I caught a beautiful emerald green color phase king snake last fall crossing the road and turned him loose over here hoping he would get big and be a poppa to a whole bunch of little kingsnakes.
I killed a copperhead big enough to make you real miserable if you stepped on him a few days ago right by the front porch.

I killed one about 30" long a couple of weeks ago. My wife & son were leaving to go to her sisters shortly after dark. It was laying just off the driveway right where she walks around the back of her car to get in. Little boy came back in to get me. I went out & shoveled it so to speak. They one good thing about every one I've encountered is they weren't particularly aggressive. I don't think they want to hurt us. The bad part is I have 3 kids aged 5, 11, & 13 around. I can't take a chance on one of them stepping on one. I am just grateful my wife is observant. Probably comes from growing up on Possum Trot Road in Lamar County.
 
I like snakes. Even the poisonous ones serve a useful purpose. I will not harm one unless it is absolutely necessary. If need be I'll relocate them. That being said, sometimes it comes down to you or the snake. So far the snake has lost every time. This one was my fault entirely, didn't look where I was stepping. But again, I'm not going to get bit if I can help it.

We feel the same about those and most snakes, they are beneficial but can be a surprise when you are walking through the yard and see one you didn't expect but the nonvenomous ones we leave alone to be vermin and pest eaters!
 
I am one of those people that likes to kill..........poisonous snakes. When I step out on the front porch to the greeting of a rattler I go into instant KILL mode. Once it is dead I get a warm fuzzy feeling having satisfied my killer instinct. So WHAT?????
 
I see a lot of little garter snakes here in Michigan; nothing big, mean and poisonous. Like others have said, I'd rather have snakes than mice. Of course, we have both but the snakes make a dent in the rodent population and are fascinating animals. Very cool.
 
I have a black snake in my yard, and it has been there for 5 or 6 years. Anytime that it sees me it takes off, but I am happy to have it, and I won't hurt it. They get rid of rats, and mice; and that makes them welcome in my yard.
 
King Snakes are good to have around and are not poisonous or aggressive. In fact they are known to be very docile and make good pets if you are inclined to have a snake as a pet. They eat rodents and Copperheads. We used to have a lot of Copperheads on our property until a big King Snake showed up some years ago. Any one who kills them is just plain ignorant of how beneficial and harmless to humans they are.

If you choose to kill a venomous snake that has invaded your living space then I have no problem with that. It's the reference to using snakes as target practice that I don't like. It's those people that get their kicks out of killing a live animal for no actual good reason that seem a little creepy to me. Sometimes people like that go on to killing something more than animals. People that like to see animals in pain really scare me.

You are right, I don't think Copperheads are in Colorado, unless maybe in river bottom and swampy areas of Arkansas drainage in SE Colorado maybe, but not likely.
I was talking about the fact that we are staying at and running the White Mule Distillery in Pioneer Missouri this summer, SW Missouri Ozarks. We have a few timber rattler/canebreak looking rattlers around here, a few western diamondbacks, but copperheads are about everywhere. A lady was bit by a baby copperhead while working in her flowerbed in midtown in Joplin a few days ago.
