From January 2024:

Members dodged a bullet yesterday with a scammer. This is the second time in recent months a long time member was hacked and impersonated here …. and on other forums. Many thanks to the members who pressed the "Report" button.

Your help is needed to avoid such things. Here's what you can do and should know.

~ Change your password often
~ Do not use the same password on more than one site
~ Use more difficult passwords that include upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols
~ Be wary of payments methods like Venmo, Zelle, PP F&F, etc
~ Use caution if a seller wants to communicate outside the forum PM (Conversation) system
~ If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is
~ Don't be an anxious buyer
~ Yes, it can happen to YOU

agreed. someone with access to their contact information should be attempting to reach them to clarify where suspicious activity is coming from

did this forum owner/manager do that? did they reach them? other steps?

instead of being so illusive about it, why not tell the membership what is being done? obviously don't have to reveal any personal info, just let members know what steps are being taken

veiled and argumentative replies to membership that is simply reaching out for answers doesn't really inspire confidence

we all agree rating systems don't prevent anything, for instance identity theft situations like this, but to throw it in the face of members that would like to see a trader rating system installed here is completely irreverent

more to the point, you may personally feel a rating system is not effective but thousands of other forums and trader sites use them, obviously there's something to them or they wouldn't be in such wide use

although I currently have no intention to trade on this site, I wasn't the only one who brought it up and I suspect a lot of others that use them on other sites wouldn't be bothered if added here. the best part is they can be left alone, unused, or ignored by folks that don't agree with them

Well FWIW the "seller" is not a known entity.....as suspected the real AzShooter answered my message on the other forum. This not him selling the revolver he states.

Reread my posts.....the pic the "OP" is using is of another member who goes by a similar name on another forum. I showed him in a message on that forum and he responded it is not him.

Snarky? Spare me the drama. You agree they aren't a preventative. You’ve been here almost as long as I have so surely seen it discussed and dismissed before. Nothing has changed in that regard. This forum is not involved in commerce or refereeing or law enforcement or conflict resolution. Again see Rule 5. Think that rule has been here since about 1999 when the forum began.

This kind of griping at the forum admins ultimately leads to one thing: no more classifieds.
We are (presumably) all adults. Handle your disputes like adults and do not shift blame on everybody else.

If we have a scammer who has hijacked a good member's account & created a bad deal,, then hopefully that can be rectified in a positive manner.

As for a rating system,, Yes,, many places have them,, and often,, it doesn't matter at all. A good example is ebay,, or as I prefer to call them; "sleezebay." When they first started,, it seemed like a good thing. But it got to where it is not a trusted way to determine anything anymore.
And adding more & more stuff to a simple forum site can make the admins have to work harder.

I personally do not care to have a rating system. I'm smart enough to look at a few things already here. (A) When did the member join? (B) How many posts does that person have? (C) Are most of their posts in the Classifieds,, or do they actually participate in real discussions here? (D) Lastly,, I always remember the old saying; "If it seems to good to be true,, then it probably is!" Or in the case of buying things,,, "Buyer Beware!"

As a supporter of this website, I don't see why a rating system is completely out of the question. A rating system is very common on the majority of forums.

A rating system will do absolutely nothing. I'm guessing by now the sellers account was hacked. It happens all the time.

Issue the OP has with James is same issue I encountered on another forum. He somehow hijacked a legitimate account and posted from it for an item for sale.

t in contact with one of them and he assured me that he just got a check and as soon as it clears his bank he will send me my money. I don;t know where this got screwed up so I don't want to accuse anyone of doing anything nefarious. please don't stir the pot. If i don''t get satisfactory resolution with this matter ill let everyone know the details as well as what the Law Enforcement end of this can do for me. in the mean time please just let it ride.

On another forum he hijacked a legitimate account. I've spoken to him on the phone, I have the phone of his accomplice. I found a guy who knows him very well and spoke to him.

I took the time to do YOU a favor. If you do not want to reach out, then I'm out of here.
