OK, so it's not a cell phone. You say it is wireless. How does it connect to any phone signal? It's got to have some way to get the telephone signals. Is it plugged into anything? You're just not making any sense. It sounds like you're saying it just picks up telephone signals from out of the air.

Yes this fone picks up a signal from thin air. I can see the towers but I can't see the signals...my land-line picks up signals from thin air also, it is a cordless model...I worked on radar, sonar, and all sorts of electronic stuff in the '60s/'70s and most of that stuff picked up signals from thin air as well, except from some parts of sonar.

OK, does anyone send you a phone bill? Is this by any chance a satellite phone you're talking about? What are the towers you can see? Are those by any chance cell towers? You say it's not a cell phone and then you say it picks up signals from those towers. OK, which is it? A land line phone needs to be connected in some way to the telephone lines on the telephone poles. This is getting crazier and crazier. Are you just pulling my leg now?

My niece, who lives in Southern California, jumped at the chance for the billing credit and allowed the electric company to install their smart thermostat in her house. Her house was never comfortable after that. It took her a while to figure out the electric company was overriding both her AC and heat settings remotely. Once she realized that, she paid to have the smart thermostat replaced with a regular thermostat. Lesson learned

Smart meters here work on a cellular signal. No signal they can't turn it off. Just saying. Of course they then have to come out an read the meter. But my power bill didn't go down when they removed the human that read the meter each month.

There is no cellular signal here where I live. My cell phone works through a wifi connection from my router.

Got an email from Southern California Edison. They want to give me $115 in billing credits for allowing them to install a smart thermostat in my place. Yeah right, like I'm going to give them a way to set my thermostat where they want it to be? How stupid do they think I am? Although I guess there are a lot of stupid people around.

Yes, same here too. They will manipulate the settings based on what they want to do. Customers are complaining that during the hot summer months they can’t lower the thermostat. I bet especially in California this is even worse, especially with all the electric cars running around.

Power co shut down the power in CO last summer. Others need to do some research.

And they can do that on an area basis independent of service entrance meters and smart or stupid thermostats.
The idea behind them controlling home temps ( if allowed ) is maybe they'll be able to slightly reduce consumptions enough
not to shut down whole sections completely.
The power grid is very marginal in many parts of our country, it's upkeep and capacity is not keeping up with demand.
For everybody having fits about a smart thermostat just keep in mind if "push comes to shove " sorta speak, they can and
likely will just turn their power off completely to the entire section. Then you can sit in the dark being pissed for a few hours.

The way I see it is that they would control your thermostat by wifi and you would have to give them your permission and your wifi password for them to do that. As I said, I have been through many of those power shut offs before they did all the upkeep work on our power lines here.

Lets see how they deal with the possible health issues this would bring on.

First utility companies are highly regulated. They aren’t going to have a temper tantrum and shut off the power.

Second, the grid is only marginal because those companies refused to invest a sufficient amount of their profits into maintaining and increasing their generating and distribution facilities to keep up with demand.
