I have a mark 3 hunter. The slide only pulls back 3/4 of an inch. I can not put the safety on or pull the trigger. Any ideas on what happened

It sounds like when the gun was reassembled that the "dingleberry" on the hammer isn't seated properly in the mainspring housing. You're going to have to swing the mainspring housing out, point the gun at the ceiling, and swing the mainspring housing back in. The last little bit you should feel a little springy resistance before closing it.

Ah - new pistol. Well, if you can't put the safety on that means the hammer isn't cocked. If you can't pull the bolt back all the way than the hammer won't cock.

The magazine isn't in backwards, is it? I'm not sure what else might prevent the bolt from cycling properly... Maybe some of the more experienced guys have additional insight.

You could also do a quick search on the forum - surely not the first time this has happened. Here's one I found:

Sounds as if the hammer strut is off of the mainspring cap and caught behind the crosspin. If the mainspring housing was opened the strut can slip off. You can insert an empty magazine, pull the trigger and hold it, take the muzzle and smack it firmly face down onto a block of wood on the floor to move the hammer fully forward. Then you can remove the mainspring housing and reset the strut.

Are you sure it won't cock. That first inch or so of movement is when it cocks the hammer and is about 3 times as hard to pull as when the hammer is already cocked.
I other words, did you try pulling hard.
