Six series barrel on GP-100?

Hey guys. I wonder if a Six series barrel will fit on a GP-100 frame. I want to convert my GP-100 full lug to a half lug and would prefer to install another barrel instead of modify the original barrel. GP barrels are difficult to find but I have located several half lug barrels for Six series revolvers at good prices. I know the ejector rod housing might have to be modified. Is there any other reason it might not work? Are the threads the same size and is the portion of the barrel that goes into the frame the same length? Is this something that a gunsmith who is a machinist could easily handle?

The length of the threading to the forcing cone on the series six barrels is significantly shorter than with the GP100s -- which was built beefier.

There is hope in that the original barrel can be modified. Here is a link to an article Denis

Another alternative would be to find a half lug 6" GP and cut the barrel to 4".

Well, I scored a Service Six .357 barrel on Fleabay for $25.00. When it shows up I'll take it to the gunsmith and see what he thinks about this (other than me being weird).

I have always wanted to get a NOS 6" Python barrel for my 4" Security Six and have a good gunsmith make me a "Couger"!

Bill Jordan once made a "Smolt", S&W 19 with a Python barrel. I think his rationale was that he wanted S&W lockwork with the Python bore and rifling.

My gunsmith can just look at it and tell me whether it will work and what would have to be done. He is a pretty talented guy who does barrel swaps on all kinds of guns.

Well the Service Six barrel showed up and I think it will work. The shank is not as long but appears to be the same size. The smith could probably cut a little extra meat off the rear of the barrel to extend the shank. Other than that it looks like all that is necessary is to remove the crane latch from the ejector rod recess, open up the recess a little bit, and add a taller front sight. The Service Six barrel is alot more trim and handy, hopefully I can make this a reality soon.

It gives me hope of making my 6" fixed sight GP100, which would just be screwing a 6" half lug or full lug GP100 barrel into a fixed sight GP frame.......I can shape a front sight to meet the POA to POI. I just need a gunsmith who knows what he's doing to fit the barrel.

Well guys, this story has a happy ending although not the one you were expecting. I made an even swap of my GP-100 for a Marlin 336 Texan in .30 WCF. Its in really good used condition and comes with Weaver bases and rings, sling swivels, and a really nice leather sling. I've been wanting one of these since I was a kid. Texans are not particularly rare but in high demand, they always go for $400.00+ on Gunbroker. Now I'm going to hunt for the GP that I really want, KGPF-840: a stainless .38 Special with fixed sights and half lug barrel.

That was a good find. I've been shopping for a deal like that in either Marlin or Winchester. But as you pointed out, they've been selling for around $350 to $400+ in my neighbor hood also.

Don't know why I didn't see the picture. That is a great looking gun. A very natural looking combination.

The python barrel had to be longer so the smith could cut new threads. And he made everything 41 spl. One of these days I'd like to have one in 44 spl.
