Single six has poor velocities???
I have a stainless steel single six. Both cylinders.
For some reason I decided to chrony them at the range yesterday. Both the 22 l.r. and the 22 mag.
Now I wished I wouldn't have. The mags were getting around 1300 fps. Can't remember how low the lr's were but they were wayyyyyy down there.
I sold a heritage a few years ago because I took it to the range and it chronied this low.
My buddy's S&W, (I have a six inch, I think his is S&W is 5) was getting over 1100 fps with 22lr. He doesn't have a mag cylinder.

So, I get home, look at the gap between the cylinder and barrel in front of a strong light...And then pull out my security six and redhawk. The single six gap was big compared to the other two. Is there a way I can deal with this????? It's going to bug me until I can at least do something with it...or it'll go out the door.,,and it is really a nice gun,..never thought I'd ever be unhappy with it.

Anybody have any fixes other than spanking someone at Ruger??? or is it supposed to be that way?

Welcome to the Forum!
My first question is have you measured the barrel to cylinder gap using a set of feeler gauges? What does the gap measure?

bottom line is "how new" is the gun? is it even 'broke in' ? stainless is known to have rough finishes, same goes for INSIDE the bore.....lots of variables there also, size of the bore versus diameter of the ammo?? try different makes of ammo, heck, it could change from LOT number to LOT number of ammo.........and as Ty noted, just what IS the size of the B/C gap ?? and how proper is the forcing cone 'cut'??? variables...............interesting, all these years of shooting and we have NEVER , nor had anyone we shoot with, "chronograph" ANY rimfires..............if it hits the target, for the right price, I'd buy it  8)

I'll try to find my guages.
The only reason I chronie'd it was because I was out there chronographing my P90 with some handloads, as well as the security six and redhawk. But hey, if my son is blasting away with the 22 mag, I might as well put a couple through the chrony just to see.

I'll find my guages,.
I usually shoot federal match (lead),..in it,..but my son was doing all the shooting and I know the mags were CCI hollowpoints. I don't recall what the LR were.

The gun has a very low round count. So maybe that would affect it if the bore's nothing to brag about.

But was it accurate? Or were the bullets just all over the place? I'd try different ammo also. As mentioned there is a chance you just used some low quality ammo.

Some 22LR ammo is awfully dirty - I think B/C gaps are better if not super tight on rimfires to avoid things getting gummed up after 100+ rounds or so. It is more likely you'll put 100+ rounds at a time downrange with a 22LR than a 44Mag.
I don't expect revolvers to hit the velocities a rifle will - as long as the revolver is accurate and putting the bullets in the same spot - provided I do my part..

Are you sure you were getting 1100fps out of a 5 or 6" revolver previously? I have rarely seen numbers over 900fps out of a handgun with HV .22lr, usually more like 850. 1300 with .22WMR is totally acceptable to me.

Indeed...I have chronoed the .22 LR dozens of times and the .22 LR Hi-velocity ammo goes in the 950 range when shot from a revolver with a 4 to 6" bbl. Fired from a semi auto, that same ammo will usually go 1050 +or-.

22 Mg ammo in a 4 to 6" bbl usually goes about 1250 or so with the 40 gr. stuff and a little faster with the 30 to 33 grain ammo. 8)

Agree with all. Also , cylinder gaps are sometimes misleading. My ruger BH Bisley in 45C has a cylinder gap of .007 .... When I measured it out , I figured I'd be lucky to hold any kind of groups or attain velocity. HOWEVER ... it shoots 1 1/2" groups at 20 yds and yields higher velocities than most of my reloading manuals say it shud. ( using similiar barrel lengths of course ) Go figure !

I've chronographed a lot of 22 lr out of handguns, and typically hi speed 22 lr ammo hits around 900 fps out of 4 to 6 inch revolvers. The barrel / cylinder gap actually doesn't seem to have a large effect. I have one 4 5/8" single six with a barrel / cylinder gap that measured 0.012 - 0.013" and I chronographed it against another that I have with a 5.5" barrel and a barrel / cylinder gap of 0.004, and you know what? The velocity out of the 5.5" barrel with the tight gap was only about 40 fps higher than the gun with the large gap... About what you would expect from the 1" longer barrel by itself...

I've never seen hi velocity 22 lr ammo hit 1100 fps out of any revolver, never. So if you were getting around 900 fps out of your revolver, it is right at what should be expected......

If you were happy with the revolver before running it over the chronograph I would simply forget it and move on. 100 fps is meaningless.
If you are still bugged by the low velocities try several more types of ammo.

Correct me if I remember wrong, but isn't the .22Mag about .001 larger in diameter than the .22LR? If so, a barrel that will shoot the .22Mag has a bore that is the .001 larger. Wouldn't that lower the velocity, by having more pressure bled off around the bullet?

Once again, I am going from memory.
I think I read that some where, and unfortunately I do not remember where.

I think that the B/C gap would make alot more difference than slightly larger bore size in the case of the 22LR as far as velocity goes - especially since most 22LR bullets are lead and not that hard and have a base that could be easily bumped up by pressure

Don't know what you expected ----

My 5 1/2" blue SS gets 1300 fps out of WW Silver Box 40 grain HPs --- I'm talking MAG, of course. Some other brands go as low as 1200 fps in 40 grain loads.
If you want more velocity; go to the 30 grainers --- they aren't accurate in my SS.
In 22 Long Rifle --- both this SS and a 4" Ruger Standard get around 950 fps --- This is with 40 grain WW Power Points rated @ 1280 fps out of a rifle.
