single six from farm auction

Bought this at a farm auction. Ruger single six serial #205738. It has a 4 5/8" barrel. Brown plastic grips. Is this a lightwieght model? A magnet does stick to the frame and cylinder.When was it made? There is a cylinder ring and wear on the sharp edges. But other then that it looks unfired or fired very little. Whats it worth. I paid $154 for it. Thanks in advance , Al

I checked the frame again and it it alloy as weaselmeatgravy
said I was getting the magnet pull from the screws, barrel and rear sight. The cylinder is steel for sure. Thanks for the replies.


Called ruger and said it was shipped with a steel cylinder in May 1957.

The s/n indicates an Aluminum cylinder frame. The s/n also indicates an Aluminum cylinder, however the cylinder has steel sleeves in each of the six chambers.

I'm confused..... if you place the hammer on half cock and then remove the base pin the cylinder can be removed. A aluminum cylinder is very light and you'll know if it's aluminum or steel. After replacing the cylinder pull the hammer to full cock then lower it down to the "at rest" position. This procedure will prevent any damage to the cylinder.

It looks to be a steel cylinder gun. Appx. value $500-$600 in my opinion. You did very well!

Wow, it hardly matters what it really is, that was a steal!!!

The pic sure looks like a steel cylinder. That would be odd for that SN. The SN looks a little off with the 2 offset so far to the left, but there are plenty of misaligned Ruger SNs. I would bet that cylinder frame is alloy - maybe you were right over the screws with the magnet? A call to Ruger records should confirm it as either a LWAC (alloy cylinder) or LWSC (steel cylinder).

Whatever it is, the price was RIGHT and you won't have any trouble getting your money back and then some if you decide not to keep it.

RENE list all blue alloy cylinder Lightweight from 205238 to 207260. The all blue steel cylinder Lightweights run from 206225 to 212534. As you can see there is a lot of overlap. With Ruger all things are possible. Call Ruger and see what the model number is. LWAC is the Alloy cylinder. LWSC is the Steel cylinder.

No it was Sunday august 8,2010. I also picked up a security six for $209. It has 2 3/4" barrel in 38 special.

Is that an adjustable sight Security Six or a fixed sight gun w/150 serial number prefix? Either way, I would be interested in buying that, but more interested if it is an adjustable sight model. The .38's are tough to find with adjustable sights.

The fixed sight guns were renamed Police Service Six at the tail end of the 150 prefix, so if it is marked Security Six it should either be an earlier 150 prefix or have adjustable sights.

yes, by the pictures it is obvioulsly a 'steel' cylinder, but it could be overlap or it could have been changed ( sent back years ago, and they would put in the "latest, up to date...") as the aluminum ones did have "issues".......

in any case, GREAT guns and GREATER buys...good for you

Yes, if it letters from the factory as LWSC it would be the earliest known of that model by quite a bit.
