I worked graveyard with very few nights off. I was home on a very rare night off. There was a knock at the door about 11:30 PM. I had a 2 1/2" nickle colt python in my hand, off side. A black man about 22 years old was there and asked me if this is where "the party was!" I never pulled (pointed) the gun on him but turned to where he could see the gun in my hanging other hand. I was sure I would have to shovel up his eye balls off my door step! I had been burglarized before as I was single and seldom home.

Just thinking my post over. (And the thread starter), I worked as a armed security guard for 35 years at Lockheed Aircraft and of course handled lots of possible events almost always in the dark. Most of course were false alarms etc with a few more serious once in awhile as that is a big factory with thousands of workers. I never was afraid as that was all I did.
Just curious of how some of you would handle such a event as I wrote on the post above given the same circumstances?

I knocked at a wrong door once when I was working and had the guy open the front door with a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun pointed at my chest. It was evening, on a city street, and the house was in the middle of the block. I thought it was rather rude to do that but I refrained from saying anything except sorry wrong house and I left. Some people are just nuts like the ones that think printing something on the end of a gun barrel is funny.

Like most of us, I haunt other gun chat sites. Some of this bravado funny talk just might have a influence on some others to do something foolish and disasterous.
A lot of it is done in fun and most of us don't take it serious but some weak minded might and think that's the thing to do. Especially younger inexperienced people.

Bill,
Several years ago, I received a call from my Mom saying she heard noises in the back of the house
under the carport. She said the back porch light was burned out.
Upon arriving at her house, (With my Rem 750 Pump 12 ga) I walked to the rear of the house, on the dark side from
the street light. I noticed the door to the shed on the carport open. I sat down on the back porch to wait, and presently the thug came out pushing Mom's lawnmower, and carrying the hedger. I racked the pump, the thug dropped
the hedger tripped over the lawn mower and before he could get up, I said "Stay there". He did, and 5 minutes later
the cops my Mom had called arrived. Later turned out the noise Mom heard was the thug breaking the back porch light.
Nothing says stop like a Rem 750 racking up!

I am old no one knocks on my door at 11:00 pm. Now when I was young and for younger people it`s a different story. Usually not common for people 45 years old and up unless younger people live with them. During day light hours I will go to the door and open it. Later at night I will have a snub in my hip pocket. Real late at night I will have the gun in my hand and open the door with my body quartered where the gun isn't readily visible. I worked security over 35 years, always had a job where I was legally armed. I also was single for the better part of my life, not married until almost 40 years old plus many years single again between marriages. In other words I never led a conventional married mans life as long as most. That life style probably put me into more "touchy" situations than the average married man where I did have events. One time I and a friend were on a motorcycle trip. I had worked swing shift that time and on impulse we started our trip after work probably 02:00 am. After riding all day we got a cheap motel room early and I crashed. I am big but my friend was a very small guy. I was just sleeping hard and it was around 8:00 PM.
My buddy woke me up from a hard sleep yelling I should call the cops. He was fighting to keep the door closed as someone was trying to push it open against him.
I was naked as a jay bird. Evidently the guy had seen that my friend was a very small guy at about 5ft 2"s but hadn't seen me at over a foot taller and at the time about 260 pounds. Call the cops?? Hell, you don't have time , you handle it now!
I didn't even grab my gun. I was young, strong and groggy. It was a small alcove where two normal people couldn't stand side by side. I pulled my buddy away with the intent of just letting the guy fly in and cold cocking him. He seen me and ran down the hall. This wasn't a door to the outside but one of those lodges that the doors are inside to a hall. It took me a minute to put my pants and boots on. I ran outside and he was in a car but it still being not real late there was people walking down the sidewalk across the exit to the lodge. It was a hot night and his window was open and people were walking across the front of his car to where he couldn't leave without maybe hitting one or two. I think this was downtown Fresno or Modesto. Two things stopped me from beating on him. First, he was claiming he tried getting in "The wrong room". He no longer was beating down our door plus was already out on a busy street. That plus I didn't even have on a T-shirt and knew I looked like a beached whale. Other tourist`s were looking at me with their mouths open. I well knew the law and knew if he stuck with his story I could be in worse trouble than him. I let him go. Now if others are sucked in with all this macho stuff like the gun writing on the muzzle cartoons etc and believe it, they could get in trouble.

I thought of another event. I was about 22 years old. This was before I got into security work. I was a foreman for a job that took me all over the states working one area for about two months at a time and then having to leave and work another state maybe a thousand miles away. I was falling in love and then would have to relocate.
Thats what happened this time. I was introduced to a beautiful wild girl by the friend of a guy who worked for me. Actually, this time she picked me. The guy that worked for me I had to fire over a few events and her ex boyfriend was also real bad news.
This was about 1964 back east. I those days I was nave and didn't take things seriously. Her ex boy friend and his friend the guy that I fired bragged they were "connected" etc and did get me in several illegal gambling rooms etc.
Another guy that lived with those two came and warned me the ex boy friend and the guy I had to fire were going to "Get me". Before I had met his girlfriend I had even been out target practicing with these guys. In one of those feelings you get only once or twice in a lifetime I set my small apartment up. I placed the revolver they knew I had EMPTY on a dresser top in plain sight. I had a pump shotgun they didn't know I had behind a open closet door. I came in from work and was sitting on the throne. I thought I heard a very small noise in the main room or kitchen. My small apartment sat upstairs over a music store. By the kitchen was a door to a back old fire escape. These guys came up the back fire escape, carded the cheap lock and let themselves in. They were in their stocking feet. One or both had picked up some empty 24 oz coke bottles I had. They intended on working me over. The smaller of the two did throw a punch or two but I was bigger and longer armed and jabbed him off. The other, the ex boy friend a 6 ft 4" Italian was a little more careful of me. I had worked my way to the closet door. Probably her ex BF was more experienced and sensed I had something going for me. We had a short conversation and they left. They never did see my shotgun. Could be that shotgun saved my life without them knowing I had one. Just having it handy probably gave me a little more nerve to scare them off than I might not have without it. It likely saved all three of us.
That woman gave me plenty trouble later. She was a young widow with a small boy. She later followed me to another state. It didn't last.

I live out in the hills and drive dirt roads to get to my place. My driveway is a couple hundred feet long and I can see the whole thing from my living room window. There are plenty of signs saying my address and name so no one has any reason what so ever to drive up to my place and come to my door. There is also a "Private Road, No Trespassing" sign.

If someone does, I always have a gun in my hand at the door. Not brandishing it but it's on my side of the door pointed directly at them. Try strong arming me and I'll just shoot through the door. It's a Beretta 92 FS. It's a double action auto so if it's not cocked, it takes a strong trigger pull to fire that first shot in double action style. No chance of an AD.
