Today, Grouch Attack and I attended the graveside services of a guy I'd only met once many years back. His wife's family were 'down the road neighbors' of Grouch Attack's family so I didn't really know the deceased at all and a few others of the family just barely but it's the thought that counts.
Of the non-family locals who showed up, there turned out to be the oldest surviving members of the post 1960 farming community present. There's only 3 of us left above ground and still living in the area and one of those isn't actively farming anymore. We buried a fourth 2 weeks back.
Sobering to say the least.
