Checked several on line sources and found the correct packaging and ORM-D stickers.

Called FedEx in nearest larger town and, after being on hold forever and being passed from person to person, (never a good sign), I was given the address of a shipping point that would accept my packages. I drove the 30+ miles there and took the boxes with their huge stickers in and set them on the counter. The agent looked at them and then at me and asked "What can I help you with?". I pointed at the boxes and said I wanted to ship them. I was asked if I wanted ground or air. I said ground. The agent then said, " We ship ORM-D here and we ship ground, but we don't ship ORM-D ground here.". Now I'm looking for the Candid Camera/Allen Funt.
"OK" I said how do you ship ORM-D here. There is a 10 minute search of three manuals and then a call to corporate resulting in another 25 minute delay. I was then told that I could not ship ORM-D from that or any other terminal; I had to establish a FedEx account, fill out the requests on line and request a home pick-up. Still no Allen Funt coming out of hiding.

I returned to my car, called the 800 UPS number and was told that there was a terminal .6 miles from my location that would accept my shipment. This phone agent checked that I had the packages showing the proper identification and had a proof of identity with me. I drove to the UPS office, took the packages in and was asked only what size the ammo was (.22). The packages were weighed and I was out the door in less than 10 minutes.

Now, I am not suggesting one service over another  , just passing on my experiences for today.

Thank you Jim for the heads up and sorry you had trouble. I have never shipped ammo but have a very good UPS driver who would help me get through the hoops if need be and I have shipped a few guns through UPS with never a problem. There was one clerk who questioned my insurance value declaration, but after an explanation as to the contents, no problem.

I ship a fair amount of ammo. Typically here (and probably a corporate wide policy) Fedex will only ship ammo dealer to dealer and they require a pick up. Drop offs aren't allowed.

I ship all my ammo ups with the ammo marked ORM-D, I don't even use stickers, just a marked. Have shipped well over a 1000 packages that way. I hand them to my local UPS driver. Never any additional haz mat fees either.

I've shipped ammo right from my house via UPS, and recieved ammo via Fedex and UPS for years.
You don't need stickers on the box to ship, all ya gotta do is use a marker to print the proper lettering onto the box you're using. In my experience though, you do need to use a box that's rated for the weight that's inside. You'll find the weight rating stamped onto the bottom. If it aint there, it aint weight-rated, and UPS may not accept it.

All that said, there is a restriction on the caliber of "small arms ammo" which can be sent. The cut-off is .50-cal...but I don't remember if .50 is the limit, or over the limit.

Hope this helps.

At least for me, box is irrelevant to ups. I reuse boxes when I can, even usps boxes, many are unrated from other uses. I use a little common sense and don't use a flimsy box based on the weight. Never any issues
